I've heard of some folks say an oil belongs to particular group by looking at the MSDS...I've looked over several msds and couldn't figure it out...Where and what do you need to look for and how do you determine this if it is possible discover by MSDS ?

Sometimes.

Some manufacturers proudly put their base oil in the MSDS because they have nothing to hide. Some don't.

If it says Polyalphaolefin, it's Group IV.

If it says something like Polyol Ester, It's Group V.

Group III will often say something like "hydrotreated, heavy paraffinic"

Some MSDS's will have a CAS chemical number and a percent. You can search the CAS on this site, as CAS numbers and their associated oil groups have been posted here in the past.
