Can you Believe this?

Unless I'm wrong, my brother's Toyota Solara that he recently bought was over filled by 1qt of oil. Toyota recently did the oil change before selling him the car. It went through there 168pt inspection system. He has the famous Sludge Monster 3.0 V6. I drained all the oil out and 6qts came out. The manual calls for 5.0 qts even with the filter. I put 5.0 qts in and it filled it up to the line. Hopefully 1qt of over fill won't damage the engine.

I put Mobil 1 10w30 in and should have a good UOA around 6,000 miles or 3 Months. Of all places, I did not expect Toyota to screw an oil change up. They have an Exrpess Lube place built on the side of the building and they use Pennzoil. The jack@sses told my brother not to use Mobil 1 and that oil is oil and Mobil 1 will break down at 3k miles just like regular oil. Unbelievable.

My dad recently bought a 2004 Accord V-6. It's overfilled by about 2/3 of a quart. It won't hurt anything, it's just sort of dumb.

This seems to be entirely too common and I haven't seen an authoritative answer on it. My 02 Cavalier with the Ecotec came with the oil level on the dip stick above full. If you add 5 of the 5.9 quarts the manual calls for, it is still slightly above the full mark.

Only worry about overfill if you get foaming. I have a 340 with windage tray and I always overfill by 1qt.

Its only a problem if the oil is close enough that the crank gets into it and foams the oil, otherwise i wouldnt worry.

Even if there are no problems from overfilling the car, I would still be upset about this. It is unexcusable for any repair shop especially a "certified" car.

lots of guys put in an extra quart when they go auto-crossing, so i wouldn't get too worried about it.

My local Toyota dealer has overfilled my car once and my wife's Sequoia twice. I now bring them the exact amount of my oil in my bottles. Infuriating.

At least they have a good attitude about Mobil 1. They actually (quietly) recommend the stuff as a good first line of defense against sludge in the vulnerable series of 1MZ-FE V-6s.
