This is a good way of thinking about it. All the pictures/videos/documents we back up to our USB external are priceless compared to the machines they are stored on.
FWIW we use (as stated) a USB external harddrive and have a batch file run once nightly that backs up our user folders to the drive. No clunky software needed - fast, dependable and easy.
