I know this is a very stupid question and I'm assuming the answer is yes, but I simply had to ask. I've never seen nor heard of a cab getting pulled over. I've caught rides many times and every time they speed like no other and on one specific occasion in Chicago I caught a ride with a cabbie who truly made me fear for my life, his driving was that dangerous. Today as I was driving through the parking lot of an outdoor shopping mall I noticed a cab doing what looked to be 40ish in a 20 and completely blew a 4 way stop. Not even the slightest release of throttle.

So the question has to get asked, are cab drivers exempt from traffic violations or do the cops simply look the other way?

Good question! One would think that they would be held to a high standard, but isnt it always right place, right time for the cop to see?

Yes my NYC can got pulled over for an expired tag or ez pass not sure. The jerk kept running meter for the 10 min or so building up the fare. I paid the guy the usual fare without extra waiting and he was screaming and jumping. Security at the building I work did not let him enter the building.

Cabbies get plenty of tickets and get checked very regularly. Also, don't forget that part of being able to break a traffic law without being caught because the police aren't around involves keeping one's eyes open for them in the first place.

5 star level obtained.

I have been a passenger in a Chicago cab that was pulled over. I was, admittedly, pretty drunk at the time, but I distinctly recall it.

Do cops look the other way sometimes? Sure, but there is a difference between driving briskly to get a passenger to the destination, and being reckless.

Never hesitate to report a cabbie. I had to do it once in New York -- guy was using his phone while driving. They take all complaints very seriously and are required by law to investigate.

Good to know! I'm not downtown too often and when I am I usually take the bus but I'll keep this in mind for my next cab experience.

Living in Chicago I've taken drunken cab rides home more then I'd like to admit. Most drive insane and I've never seen any get pulled over. Chicago cops unfortunately have their hands full with other issues....

Come to think of it, I don't remember ever seeing a cab get pulled over, but I have seen a lot of bad driving from cabbies.

Around here it is usually wandering/not signaling/being lazy as opposed to speeding. In fact it seems that cabs in Bham are never in a hurry to get anywhere and are more likely to be blocking an entrance or alleyway than actually transporting customers. To get a ticket around here, you really need to be going way over the speed limit and the cabbies don't do that. They are still more frightening and unpredictable drivers than seniors though.

Having been to Chicago, most drivers drive insane...lol.
I think cops generally pay less attention to cabbies but i have seen the occassional one pulled over.

Not a taxi, but I saw a bus full of students pulled over when I was in college. Must have sucked for everyone who was late to class.

Exactly.

Aside from dignitary motorcades (whose movements are severely restricted anyway), anyone in any vehicle can get pulled over. Including other cops.

Really? I've seen a few up here in the Northeast. It's rare, but I have seen it.

Why is it that taxi drivers seem to be the worst drivers on the road? For people that drive for a living, you'd think they would be better drivers.
