Picked up a Honda A02(Fram made) oil filter for $5.99 at my local Honda parts department, and it did include a crush washer. From what I can gather, the A02 is basically a Fram TG with less efficiency, thicker end caps, and probably different media.

My son just bought a 2008 Honda Civic recently, and it needs to be serviced. Can the Honda A02 oil filters do two OCIs since Honda recommends changing oil filter every other oil change? I figure if Honda says it can then who am I not to believe them. On the other hand, I have my doubts.

Honda seems to have a lot of faith in the A02, whose innards are basically a Fram TG. The Honda dealers around me always change the filter at each OCI and that's what I do.

Filters are cheap, engines aren't

If Honda says they will I have to believe they know what they are talking about. But for me I will use the Ultra for a few bucks more.

So the owners manual says every other but the shop personnel do it every time. My Chrysler says every other too, but I can't wait that long to cut open another filter. Every other is so few filters and so long time between, it's hard to keep interested in them.

It looks similar to the Fram TG but it is not the same. In the Honda filter they use thicker end caps and a lot more rigid and thicker filter media. So it hold up better.

From the pictures here on the forums, the filter media does looker thicker, and in that thread it was said that the media was thicker than the ToughGuard.

As has been said, Honda apparently thinks they can.

I personally am not comfortable with it. Even if it doesn't make any difference to my car, I consider spending the extra eight bucks or so every few months to be worth it for my peace of mind.

It's warrantied by Honda to do two ocis. Now whether you trust that or not is up to you. If the total of the two ocis is 20k miles, might be a little different than 10-12k miles. My preference if using two oci would generally be for a filter specifically rated for extended ocis.

The other thing is, if it's already up on ramps or stands and you have a respectable oci, changing out the filter (non extended type) is a good idea imo, while it's up and you're there. And the 08 is in an easily accessible location as opposed to the seventh gen.

Your construction/efficiency reference for the A02 is pretty accurate.

I am just going to tell my son that Honda says it's OK for two OCIs, but I will tell him that I would change it every time. He's a tight wad, so he will definitely go with the Honda recommendation. It will definitely get cut open when ever it does get changed.

The shop personnel want to sell you a filter plain and simple. What are you expecting to find when you cut open your filter?

It's in Honda owners manuals as part of their MM Maintenance Minder(OLM) dash readout. Letter A means change oil only, Letter B means change oil and filter. And they alternate between the two. Before MM it was an Owners manual recommendation.

Estimated cost of ownership may be part of it, being lower. And it was posted here that Honda has tested it an found it to be acceptable and effective. That said, it's not mandatory. Warranty stays in force either way.
