When doing the brakes this weekend, i noticed the seal was pooched out a bit. After 162k miles, it's due....

I need to replace or rebuild this caliper and was wondering what was involved in a caliper rebuild. From what I can see, the gasket/seal is replaceable but everything else pretty much looks to stay.

I'll then compare that with purchase of a new/rebuilt one.

btw specifically 97 camry v6 front brake caliper

I used to rebuild calipers and wheel cylinders, but nowadays you'll find the price difference between parts and a complete rebuild aren't that much different. Few people do their own rebuilds anymore. Do your homework and see if that's true for your car.

With a rebuilt unit, in addition to new seals, you get complete removal of corrosion, bore cleanup, new piston, new bleeder screw (is your old one siezed?), and new slide assemblies. All you need is silicone grease (Syl glide or dielectric grease) to lube up the proper areas and you're good to go.

well a rebuilt is only $77 plus core, and just the kit parts are getting close to that, so I think I'll probably go with the flow and just replace the whole thang.....

thanx

Just trade them in for quality Remanafactured Units.

Wagner, Raybestos and factory ones are quality, safe and warranted.

Might as well do it right the 1st time.

Oh ya not to beat a dead horse from another related post

Please purge your old brake fluid, rear too assuming the bleeders or wheel cylinders have not seized due to being forgetten *lol*

yes, I bled some fluid, my technique is to use the c-clamp to compress the caliper and use that to bleed the piston. It gets plenty of old stuff out, the stuff I remove is typically very clear still.

Replaced the whole caliper Saturday morning without any issues other than the brake line mounting bolt hole had a bad tap. So after I get everythign installed and go to hook up the brake line, no go. Have to clean myself up and take a trip to the store to get a replacement. Luckily they had one, and we tried the bolt there.....just to make sure..

Back home, slapped it on, worked out the air, checked them out, lowered the floor jack and away we go to get that $50 core charge. Quite simple actually, but I'm glad I had the impact wrench, those caliper bracket bolts weren't coming off any other way...
