California's at it again?

A shop owner came in a bit ago.. and we started talking about the state and their ability to think up of zany things to torment the automotive industry.
He said a few days ago a guy from the EPA came and checked his metal recycle bin. He told him that there's a new law in effect that prohibits the replacement of a rotor if it isn't at minimum thickness.
Nobody's heard of this either..
The reasoning is to save resources!

How about I cut that guy's rotors to .001" above minimum and let him drive around!

Is that only for shops? If it includes the DICers does that mean we have to take our old rotors to an autoparts store and have them measured before we can buy new ones?
I know it sounds crazy but when it comes to Ca. and laws anything is possible!

That's nuts! I'd check if that law is really in the books and if that EPA guy wasn't on an ego trip instead.

Sure. Also, prohibit people from getting rid of their cars until they're at least 25 years old.

There are FAR worse places to live. Why would anyone want to live in the freezing cold? LOL!

Back on topic - I search the EPA web site and the only thing I could find was how to deal with the "toxic waste" of turning rotors.

I honestly don't see what the big deal is. Doesn't the used rotor get recycled anyway???


If they want to conserve resources, they should put more effort towards getting everyone to recycle as much as possible.

My uncle got $400 from a few blown engines and a ton of used car parts (rotors, axles, etc) from a local metal recycling place.

Instead of trashing the stuff, recycling is the way to go.

Either he made it up, or someone is lying about being an EPA inspector. Is he sure they weren't casing his place to steal stuff later?

wow, you totally missed my point, possibly due to lack of quality of my post. I was saying that if I live in the freezing cold, I can deal with that by going inside. What's to shelter you from all the insane laws in California?

It may have happened in California, but the EPA is a federal organization.

If you want to know why we're broke, a lot of it is because we pay for people to go around doing this sort of thing, absolutely wasting the taxpayer's money. Do they think I go around replacing my rotors if I don't need it? The marketplace solves this issue!

No actually I did get your point. I was being a little bit of a smart *** Did you notice the smiley face and the two "cracksmeup" icon?

That and maybe I missed taking my Geritol today! LOL!

Seriously while Ca. gets the notoriety for all the insane laws there are other states with equally crazy laws. Off the top of my head - Oregon comes to mind. They are famous (or maybe I should say infamous) for their no self service at gas stations. I got yelled at one time and threatened with a citation or arrest for taking the hose out of the tank when the "attendant" was too "busy" and was screwing around. (Like the rich girl in the new Mercedes was going to give an average looking high school kid working at a gas station her phone number).

Plus as someone else pointed out, we don't even know for sure that this is a law. At the risk of sounding "political" a government official would never lie to us - would they?
