Oil change today on the '77 F-100, ran Rotella T4 10w30 and Napa Gold for approx 1500 miles, 23 months. Long road trip after the oil change back in 2023 then short trips since then. Picture of valve cover from a week before the oil change as well. Light sludge or residue, but it wipes off easily. So the Rotella must be doing something to clean up this old engine.

Replaced with a Napa ProFormance filter and Traveler 15w40. Intermittent lifter tick experienced, so hoping that a fresh oil change will quiet things down.

It caught some stuff. Nice to hear of an old 77' still putting around. Is that a 351 of sorts or was that well before that era?

It's the big block - 460 cu in/7.5L. The block code actually puts it as a Lincoln Continental type engine, at some point the small block 302 that the truck came with was swapped out for the big block. Fuel mileage must have dropped proportionally, because a 45 gallon aux tank was installed into the bed!

Thanks for the details. Yeah, I had a 460 Class C motorhome that drank heavily. How long have you owned it?

Since 2013. I've done an oil change about every 2-3 years (about each military PCS move), with 2-3k miles on each oil change. Only put about 10k miles on it in the past 12 years.

Significant blowby, so I need to do a compression test and stick an endoscope in the cylinders to see what I'm dealing with. Kind of Schroedinger's cat situation going on - hesitant to dig too far into things when it's running fine!
