my car is spec'ed to use a baldwin B179, but i'm using a B173-S. The B179 has an 8PSI bypass valve and the B173-S has a 20PSI bypass valve. Could I be damaging my car by continuing to use the 20PSI bypass valve oil filter?

thanks in advance.

In a clean engine in good mechanical condition, it probably doesn't really matter.
If the filter were to become clogged, and the O Pump wasn't capable of producing 20 PSI, you would have no flow.
Interestingly, when you cross the Baldwin # to Wix, they show a noticeably lower BP pressure.
Would a B161-S work? It still shows the 20 PSI bypass however.

Interesting thread for ya:
Does It Really Matter What Filter You Use

The preponderance of the data suggests the oil filter selection makes little difference. Why not use a filter spec'd for your engine (bypass pressure, filter media, flow rate, etc.) and get on to obsessing about the grease in the door hinges?

WHAT! We have to put grease where?

OMG, do we use 5w30 or 10w30 grease, and do we run conventional or synthetic. Does it matter if the ambient temp. is above -18 and what about people who like to open their doors alot? can I go a long time between GCI and Aaaarrgghhhh!!!!!!

I use a belgian 0w30 grease with a bypass filter and pre-greaser.

No worries for me.

Hopefully I can find out what the bypass pressure for the M1-105 I'm using now is and find a replacement with a lower bypass pressure setting whenever I run out of the filters stashed in my closet.

If anyone knows the bypass setting for the M1-105 that would be fine too

You say your car is spec'd for a B 179 and then you want to know about an Mobil 1 M1-105.
Very different gasket diameters!

Why not just state the kind of car you have and what you really want in a filter?
Posting conflicting part #'s just confuses the issue.

Sorry about that, I drive a 00' Acura 3.2 TL which is spec'ed to use the larger honda filter before they downsized. Cross-references to PH3593A, ST3593A, Purolator L14459 (12-15PSI bypass), etc...

I've used a ST3593A before the switch to synthetic, but recently I've been alternating bewteen ST3950 or M1-105's.

It would be nice to find a filter that is large enough to increase the capacity of oil in the system, possess' more filter material for 10k oci's, can flow as well as it filters, and has a bypass setting similar to factory spec's.

Too much to ask?
