As Gary mentioned, reduce your debt load as much as possible. That means zero out the plastic. Also, have an emergency fund of 3-5 months of expenses, minimum.
Once you've done that, I recommend Exxon-Mobil (XOM) and Conoco-Phillips (COP). Once you've got your fill of that, you might consider investing in the "oil industry spectrum" with Fidelity Select Energy (FSENX) or a similar fund.
If you don't mind the roller coaster ride, you'll do fine if you think long term.
