It seems to me that I am seeing more and more cars broken down on the road. For a while there I was commenting (to myself) that there seemed to be fewer cars along the road, they must be getting more reliable. Now, the converse. Anyone else notice the same thing? Or is it a sign of the economic times and people are not doing preventive maintenance????

Sorta in waves for me...seems like one stretch, nothing but older Ford Rangers....then VW vans of all vintages....Pontiacs.....Mazdas....maintenance is a terrible thing to neglect.....
Most of the ones I see broken down on the road are missing the tags, leading me to conclude that the owner is a low-class piece of trash who won't dispose of their junk properly (and probably didn't bother to take care of it either).
And too stupid to realize they can be traced by VIN or in many cases by engine serial number.
Added afterthought....
Do the authorities care enough to bother tracking the low-lifes down?
I thought taking off the tags meant "Take me, I'm Free". But, they could phone a towing company to pick up the car for free. It's not that difficult to pick up a phone book. If you leave a trailer around here with a flat tire and no plate you won't be seeing it again. Somebody with a bigger trailer will scoop it up.

You don't see too many around here. The ones that are left are typically gone within 4 - 5 days. The cops will put a "move it or lose it" sticker on the window within a couple days as a signal to the MDOT tow truck drivers to stop by and pick it up. They go up for auction if the owner doesn't claim them within a certain period of time. The most recent one I've seen was a Suzuki Esteem.
I don't see many around here (Maine) but on road trips to Massachusetts they're all over the place. And tow trucks are busy coming, getting, and loading them too!
It's a very odd mix. Late 80's Camrys, newer Volkswagens and Lexuses. Not many domestics (MA seems too preppy for them) but a fair amount of Tauruses. The only rule is there are no rules.
BTW, it was one of the first hot days, and I have noticed that shakes a few losers out of traffic.

something I use to notice a lot also: was the 'newer' cars,suvs etc on the back of a tow truck. I would wonder how so many good looking (aka expensive) were being towed??
then I got a new job that moved me downtown, there was the answer. various roads had parking bans starting at say 3pm. the traffic cops would go up and down these roads at this VERY minute and tag every car, with the tow trucks lining up right behind the offender and off they go. I guess it's a traffic control measure to enable rush hour to move more efficeintly.

Around here most of the vehicles that I see on the side of the road are in the summer, shaking out the cooling systyem problems, and otherwise most of the vehicles seem to be Ford trucks, I guess they were towing something, and fancy Jeeps.
