Briggs and Stratton Files Chapter 11

This year I bought a new Kobalt 80 volt self propelled mower. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-80-...21-in-Cordless-Electric-Lawn-Mower/1000698046

As a loyal Lawnboy 2 cycle owner with many ring and reed valve replacement jobs under my belt, it was time for a change. I did a lot of research before making my decision. Briggs makes this mower for Lowes. I later discovered that this is their battery powered mower platform and that they brand it for several other companies......Stihl, Snapper, Green Works and others.

Like most people I was doubtful of this technology, but I have to say I have not been disappointed yet. I live on a corner 3/4 acre lot and I can cut the yard 1.5 times on a single charge of the battery. The brushless motor also has a sensing load governor, just like a gas counterpart that speeds up the RPMs automatically when under a heavier load.

This mower is also light weight by comparison. My front yard consists of 30 degree incline, thus my prior loyalty to 2 cycle Lawnboys, and the Kobalt makes short work of cutting that area. Lastly the issue I had with most of the other battery powered electric mowers is their proprietary battery configurations. At least with the Briggs Electric platform, the battery units can be swapped, and hopefully with the Briggs re-org they will stay in business. When buying any OEM mower, future parts availability is always a concern. Thankfully I never had that issue with the Lawnboys, and I am hoping I wont have it with the new Kobalt electric. If you are in the market for an battery powered electric, then I urge you to give this one a L@@K.

Thanks for reading.

If I could have a bought a new Lawnboy Duraforce 6.5HP 2-cycle, I would have no doubt made that choice.

I inherited my craftsman walk-behind with a Briggs.. when it dies deck will probably rot out first I’ll go Honda.

When Briggs switched from the flat head vertical shaft engine to the new mostly plastic ohv engine is when the first nail went into their coffin.
valve train and carburetor problems ensued.
I still prefer my tecumseh or lawn boy over any new briggs.
I mostly agree with your thoughts. I liked the Tecumseh's and those flat head B & S engines refused to give up.

I got one of those new hyper tough mowers with the ohv Briggs on it here at home. The engine which is less than 8 months old dropped a valve which destroyed the piston and messed up the cylinder head.
