I have always used the official Briggs filters in the red box - the ones with two holes. Mine has number 5432K.

There $13 bucks now, and with briggs bankrupt I doubt quality control means much. Anyone know of an aftermarket brand they like. There are million of them on amazon, etc but I don't trust there reviews.

I really wouldn't let them going bankrupt concern you too much as far as parts. I'm sure nothing has changed, they are just under different ownership. Their OEM parts have always been better than aftermarket, mainly because they need to get the engines through warranty. For air filters on all small engines I try to stay OEM, because I've had plenty of problems with aftermarket Amazon junk not fitting correctly. The filter media is always fine, but sometimes the filters aren't even close to making a good seal with the housing, which is critical in dusty environments.

I trust the B&S air filter more than the aftermarkets. I think you are worrying over nothing.

Not overly worried but felt like $13 bucks was a bit much, but as mentioned the aftermarket are crap too, so I guess 13 bucks a couple times a year won't break the bank. Thanks for everyone's input.
How often are you replacing them? I find even if you mow in dusty environments you can knock out the dirt then blow it out with an air compressor. This is the recommended procedure per Briggs. If you hold it up to the light and can't see through it after cleaning it, then it is time to replace.

You could also go with one of the major aftermarket parts suppliers - Stens, Oregon, and Rotary. All supply very good parts.
Yup, these are the only aftermarkets I would use. The only issue is depending on where you buy them the prices can be very similar to the Briggs parts. Just avoid any of the no-name brands.

Only a couple a year - so really no big deal. I take it out and shop vac it every couple mows. Were on the South Carolina coastal plain, which is all silty sand which gets dusty when you mow.
