Bridgestone buys Pep Boys

I wouldn't be too surprised if other tire companies begin to buy other service/parts stores. Although what make Pep Boys different from AutoZone/O'Reilys is that also they do car service.

I would be more surprised if Pep Boys continued to open stores that had just as much store shelf space as car service bays.

From the article:

Quote:
Say goodbye to iconic auto repair chain Pep Boys – Manny, Moe & Jack, which agreed to be bought by tire giant Bridgestone Americas Inc. for $835 million, or $15 a share cash.

...

Shares of Pep Boys jumped 22.8% to $14.98 a share in early trading, suggesting investors think the tender offer will be a success.

Who would buy a stock at $14.98 with the knowledge that it will be bought back at $15 in the near future? That's a pretty small margin.

Yea my worry is less competition and options. I am not a fan of firestones, bad prices and bad service.

Agreed.

Half the reason I dislike Firestone tires (plus other good reasons) is the Firestone service centers...

Hand's down IME, worse then Iffy Lube, Sears Auto, Walmart TLE, Mavis, etc

Bad alignments, wretched service, ridiculous upsells, and off there rocker pricing on just meh Firestone tires

Tires/wheels have been encroaching more and more on the auto-parts space at my two local schlep boys for a number of years now. Almost half the floor space (not counting the 'behind the counter' parts area) is tires, hubcaps, and wheels.

Oreilly's bought VIP in Northern New England and took over the parts but not tires/service business. They now have a captive audience to sell their parts to.

Wheels must be where the profit margin is. Every time I get a mailer in from Tirerack it is as much wheels as tires and that used to be less true.

I'm an old Philly area guy, so this story is sad.

Founded in Philly in 1921, the Pep Boys has seen its better days. Overexpansion in the 1980's and 1990's and poor management by the Pep Boy's later generations of the family, I feel, have led to this demise. Not to mention too many crummy looking stores and an abundance of poorly trained mechanics.

Could either be the end of clearance motor oil at the Pep Boys, or a whole new clearance sale opportunity.

Looks like Pep Boys went from bad to worse.
Just what the nation needs is more Firestone stores.

So are all of the Pep Boys locations going to be turned into Firestones? Or is Bridgestone going to continue with both brand names?

Lets see how they play it. Tire companies can own a bunch of brand names and factories, so they could offer premium Bridgestone, medium performance Firestone, and value-cheap low performance products with odd sounding names like "Unicorn Creations", "Fate-O", "KumHo", "Jetzone Revengers", all real names of tires, no kidding.

They use a "small h" in Kumho. The "H" is silent.
