I discovered this little gem:- "Motor oil does more than just lubricate an engine. It also forms a film on bearing surfaces that lifts and separates moving parts so they don't touch to reduce friction and wear." here:- http://www.aa1car.com/library/motor_oil_605.htm

Can someone explain the difference please?

The sixteen inch journals on our GE turbine/generator sets were supplied with 35 psi oil supply of the shaft mounted oil pump. The rotation of the shaft in the babbitted bearings created the actual lubrication. Those units ran for years before major disassembly. I saw first hand what happens when oil supply to those journals was lost because of operator mistakes. The number 2 shaft journal on the unit 2 turbine is 1/2" smaller than the other journals, and a bearing for that one journal sits in a warehouse. Hadn't been used for the twenty some years I worked there.
