So I'm at the dealership looking at Civics today. When I bought my 08 Civic, I was told by the dealership that Honda uses a special break in oil and not to change for the first 5000 miles. So I ask the salesman if Honda is still using this oil. He looked at me and said "That's news to me". Either I was given a bunch of [censored] when I bought my Civic, or this guy doesn't know what he's talking about.

I haven't heard of Honda using a "break-in oil"; probably just a regular conventional. I have a feeling that the stealership does not know what they are talking about(not uncommon).

It is/WAS their Semi syn. with high moly. They have moved away from that additive, the new thing is Boron. You don't need a break-in oil for a Honda. I would change it out after 1500mi. but feel free to leave the stuff in if you want (some people think you need to leave it in, I respectfully disagree). It is really nothing you can't get from any other oil. If you want a real dose of Boron, Pennzoil Ultra is the way to go.

Why change it out after 1500 miles? It has a filter that is there to do its job. Why waste perfectly good oil for no reason. The manual does not suggest a quick change.
For all the guys on here that want to use synthetic oils to lengthen their OCI's you are proposing a quick change for no logical reason at all.

I have seen the very high moly results on Honda first fill UOA's many times.
Honda builds great engines that are very reliable - you will not go wrong if you follow their instructions regarding the break in and first oil change.

Huh? The current Civic model has a warranty extension for cracked blocks and previous Ks had soft camshafts.

I think this thread proves once again, that sales people and internet experts know less than the engineers that test, design, and stand behind the the engines they produce. Given the choice, I'll trust the manufacturer, and follow the advice in the manual.
If you want to have a warranty, you'd better be prepared to PROVE you followed the manual.

When I first saw this thread I wanted to respond immediatley since I own a 2007 Honda Fit and recall that you are not supposed to change the oil until 5K. Things change and I don't own an 08 Civic so I kept my mouth shut. Well I just checked my OM and sure enough it says under Break In Period( Do not change the oil until the scheduled maintenance time) which means 15% . A good rule to follow in case ypu ever have to make a warranty claim.

Honda initial oil fill oils have been very high in moly, and were recommended to be kept in longer than most were comfortable with.
In the old days, keeping the original oil in for 5,000 miles would have been considered insane.

2010 Honda Pilot. Odometer read 31 miles.
My point is Toyota Odometer are not accurate. basically when my camry odometer read 100,000 miles. It is really 97,420 miles.

I dont know why people keep posting wrong info. When the OLM gets to 15% thats your time to SCHEDULE your oil change/service, if say you were going to use the dealership. You change your oil at 0% whether its your first oil change or 100th as per the manual.

Yes tire differences can give different readings. Tire pressure can also have a small effect.
By law/regulation, speedometers can NOT read less than actual speed; so an error of a few percent is built in.

yeap. I am happy my camry v6 is running strong other than speedometers ( off by 2-3 mph), odometer off by .8 miles ( 31 miles driven). I use garmin gps speedometer.
other than that I like my camry much.
for Honda owners, you can follow by MM or whatever. My buddy have 2007 honda accord 4 cyl. He change oil according to the MM ( usually around 10-15% ). He do the oil change at local chevron, near livermore.) chevron heardquarter is located in san ramon.. so local chevron lube service probably use fresh motor oil..
his honda accord is now 180,000 miles. no problems with the engine. He use dino only.
