are there advantages or disadvantages to adding DOT 4 to DOT 3?

if a system says DOT 3, can you safely add DOT 4?

DOT 3 & 4 are very compatible. You can safely add DOT 4 to DOT 3.

I agree. The one thing that I may add is that with most DOT 4 fluid you should be even more aware of ocassionally changing the fluid. The higher boiling point usually comes with the compromise of having more of an afinity for water so it deteriates a little more quickly.

I use DOT 4 in my cars.
