Brake Fluid Flush

GM has been saying that the brake fluid never needs to be changed for a very long time. I'm not a believer. Most European manufacturers suggest a flush once every 2-4 years. I try to maintain that sort of schedule with our vehicles no matter the maker.

The problem with that is that brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air. Water is heavier than brake fluid, so any moisture will settle to the bottom of the system over time, which would be your calipers or wheel cylinders. Just changing out the fluid in the master cylinder won't do anything to get the moisture contaminated fluid out of the calipers, you need to open a bleeder and remove the old fluid.

They still require it every 2 years.

I think every 2 years is adequate unless you thack the car- in which case I'd cut the interval to every 6 months- and I'd go with a good DOT 4 fluid if it wasn't specced for it already.

I wouldn't think one make or model would be different than any other when it comes to brake fluid. I slacked off on my car and didn't do a full flush when I got it although I did a few reservoir changes. The fluid in there turned black within a few thousand. Tomorrow I'm going to replace my first master cylinder the pedal went to the floor last night. Can't say if it would've helped but defiantly wouldn't of hurt. I typically do 2 year intervals on the Escape since it keeps it from eating the brakes and 3 year on all the others.
