What can cause a brake booster to fail? This is the 2nd time I'm replacing the brake booster on my 01 Toyota Tundra. The booster is slightly above the engine. Would gas fumes or moisture accumulate in the brake booster? I'd like to resolve issues first before installing the "new" reman unit.

have never, ever, seen one fail! Make sure it's physically adjusted correctly for travel at pedal and at master cylinder if there are provisions for it. Would also look to see if the fresh air it is picking up could be coming from a dusty or wet location.
wouldn't hurt to open the failed one up to see how it's failing.... ground up seals, rust, etc...

What broke each time? What was wrong each time?
I seem them fail so rarely, that I can't determine cause of failure, unless the master cylinder leaks.

The reason I don't know was because I didn't have any desire to take apart the unit.

I have replaced one brake booster on one car in my 30+ years of car ownership. Many of those went well over 200,000 miles.
In that one case, the booster itself was still working, but the vacuum seal on the firewall started to leak...causing a really annoying whistle...replaced it with a new part (ouch, nearly $600) and it's been good for 60K...
Unless contamination gets in there (dirt, or brake fluid), they simply don't wear out...taking yours apart would be the only way to know why you lost 2...perhaps, if you're using "reman", they're not up to the durability of OE?
