Bought some SuperTech HM 10w-40

For my OTHER lil cousin's car, a 1992 VW Cabrio with an OP problem. In summer, anything short of 20w-50 kicks an OP light. Last winter, we did Syntec 5w-50 which is great. I know he did not want to pay $22 for oil again, so I decided to go cheap and see if 10w-40 High Mileage would crank and keep OP in winter. I wanted to get him MaxLife or even better the thick GTX High Mileage, but thought, why not....it was $8 for 5q! How thick do you think the Super Tech 10w-40 High Mileage is? How long an OCI, 5000-6000 miles?

Welcome to the joys of owning some of that Teutonic Engineering.

Sounds like you made a good choice to me. I always went for the highest shear stable HTHS/viscosity for these engines. Seems like these engines just won't tolerate ant Xw-30s that shear down in short order.

As far as the OP, generally the pumps wear and they get sludgy. Replacement with a G60 pump is the solution.

I ran the quality synthetics in it with 5K OCIs for the 120K miles. The inards were spotless when I replaced the oil pan and cam cover gaskets at about 100K. Never heard about the oil pump wearing out, but that was many years ago. I just avoided 5w30 conventionals that sheared out in the last few years I owned it. I traded it in when it had about 150K miles.

Yep, same poroblem in the sludger saabs. The pump wears quickly. That's why I've used lots of 15W40 HDEO and Mobil 1 15w50...along with that nice Syntec 5W50......

I'm gonna see if a thick 30 weight like Maxlife Symth 10W30 will keep good pressure over the winter....
