Bought my first Rifle today!

Academy Sports & Outdoors had a killer sale on the Savage Stevens M200 rifle in .270 Rem caliber for $179 (normally $249)...most of the online reviews say it's a great basic/upgradable rifle even at $300, so I bit the bullet.

I got the rifle, hard rifle case, a box of .270 ammo, and ammo case for less than $230 out the door with tax.

I did not get a scope as I wanted to do more research, and knowing I would not shoot it probably before mid-September did not want to fork over the cash just yet.

Thoughts?

The first, and only, high powered rifle I bought is also a Savage in a .270 Win.; Model 111. It seems to be a good quality gun and it's consistent. I've only fired about 30 rounds with it so far.

Very good basic rifle. The action and barrell are very good. The reason for the very low price on a quality rifle are things like the flimsy plastic stock and a not so good trigger. Upgrades are somewhat avail. for that rifle. Savage changes things so much the aftermarket has a hard time keeping up.

Enjoy but 270 seems like a ton of caliber for Texas.

Yup, it's nearly identical to the 110 except for the Accutrigger. I can get an upgraded trigger should I choose to for around $70, but the factory one also has some weight adjustment. The stock I am not worried about; lots of guys sand/paint them so if I get bored, it's been done before.

I think I will start with a cheap Simmons scope 9x40 to get a feel for shooting the thing, and consider upgrading down the road.

If you're in Texas/LA/AR and you have an Academy nearby, this is a smokin' deal through Saturday. Another friend saw my post and is going out and getting one for himself

That's a screaming good deal, & the .270 will easily take any game in Texas. Folks in NW Montana thought it fine for Elk & Moose too!

IMO you have exactly the right idea on the scope, something decent & affordable for now. Once the scope is mounted, just add a sling & you're set for a lifetime of hunting if you so choose.

I have shotgun and a pistol, but I've always liked the 30-06.

I really need to learn the gun's math because I dont know how a 30-06 compares to a .270.

I ended up getting a cheap Simmons 3-9x40 scope...$39 down from $59, and then an additional $25 Mail In Rebate-- score!! The ring/mount kit that the salesman gave me did not fit, so I'll be back to try to get another one of the same inexpensive flavor.

I also got a laser bore sighting kit ($59 reg price) on clearance, new in box unopened, for $9.88

You must be the rifle bargain champ this week! The scope should be just fine- you may well never need or even want another. All the mega-$ uber-optics are extra nice I'm sure, but most of us can manage very well indeed with something like your Simmons.

Laser bore sighter for $10! Now *that* I'm really jealous about.

Guess I'll have to keep on with the old fashioned, low-tech way. Mount scope, remove bolt from unloaded rifle, place in cradle, center paper plate by sighting through bore at apropriate distnace(not real far), then adjust scope to center crosshairs on paper plate, continuing to ck that plate remains centered in bore. More trouble & fussy, may take a few more rounds for final sighting in- but with a bolt action rifle it works!
