Bought a 10" iPad 4 for Christmas

It's for the family really, and especially the kids, so I spent some time over the last few days setting it up, getting their apps on it, connecting it to our broadband, etc. Just making sure everything on it works and that it's ready to go when they open it.

What a fine piece of equipment. It has better Wi-Fi reception in our house than anything else we have (including two iPhone 4ses). It's very very fast doing anything. I understand the A6X processor is nearly twice as fast as the old A5 in the iPad 3, and bests most every 10" tablet on the market for processing speed using benchmark tests. The Retina Display screen is phenomenal. At normal viewing distances, you might as well be looking at a real photograph. Apps optimized for this display like USAToday's app look like art on the screen.

This may singlehandedly render every other machine in our house obsolete. The only things we still do on the iMac that would be difficult on the tablet are our financial spreadsheets and multimedia work (including movies, photos, and archiving those photos on an external hard drive with Time Machine).

Anyone else have the new 4th gen iPad, either 10" or 8"?

I did put an Ipad on my Xmas list for my wife. she is running out of ideas for me. guess we shall see if she decides to get it. got to play around with an Ipad2 the other day and it seemed like something I might be able to use. glad your purchase went well for you !

Thanks. We bought it at Best Buy before the Black Friday deals. Honestly, I wasn't expecting the 4th generation one to be on sale ANYWHERE this year, including from Apple.com itself, but it was. We could have saved 40 bucks by waiting and buying online on Friday. Oh well. Live and learn I guess.

Yes we have a 10 inch. I got tired of what it can't do. It sits beside my laptop. Always grab the laptop. The IPad is a great device but it did not replace my laptop.

Depends on how one uses technology. The gals, Wife & daughter use the iPad almost exclusively. The guys, Me & my son use PC/Mac primarily, tablets are auxiliary devices.

My wife hates using a PC now, the ipad is so much easier for her usage habits. I'm the opposite.

Any way you look at it, that iPad 4 will be used a LOT.

Hands down my most used device. If I had to chose one, the ipad would be first on that list. I just use the thing THAT much. It's pretty much perfect for me. Replaced 90% of my at home laptop or desktop usage. I had every generation of the iPad and the 4th gen is fantastic. The battery life is very impressive this time around too. I only charge it every 8-9 days and get about 18 hours full usage per charge,

Apple hooked me on this one. I am 100% sold on the iPad. The new nexus tabs are nice but nothing is close to as refined as Apple's tab.

Can't see myself doing enough computing on a tablet to make it a primary device.

One thing I like them for, digital textbooks. The days of carrying a back breaking load of textbooks is over.

Managed to order on Thurs the latest iPad with $60 off from Best Buy for my daughter.

You can still get the larger ram models for $60 off. The 16GB is $40 off.

I think the next generation of devices will be like the Surface. There are plenty of keyboards out there for the iPad too.

Kids these days are happy to send short messages and emails on phones and tablets. When they get older, and technology becomes even more widespread in schools, they'll need to type more, but will still want the touchscreen.

I'm thinking of getting the Nexus 10 through work once they make it available. I like a little more flexibility eg the Torque app for ODBII. I already have the iPhone. Wife might want a Nexus 7 or 10 also.

We eventually plan to get an Apple Bluetooth keyboard for it. We looked at various keyboard cases (like the Zagg case), but didn't like the bulkiness or weight of them. Plus, to use those without much effort, the tablet necessarily sits right at the front of the keyboard, without many options for reconfiguring unless you take the keyboard out of the case, etc. So a separate keyboard is probably a better solution anyway. My wife has a very nice satchel bag thing that she carried her Dell netbook in, and it fits the iPad and charger easily, and the Apple keyboard will slide in as well.

Example. Last night I wanted an episode of Top Gear ( special) Could not find it. So I download the torrent file. Went through some work e-mails that contained PDF's. Printed them off. Knock out two cover letters in Word to go out Monday.
Finished up and then watched the Top gear special. If I were using the ipad I would never get it done. It can't do it.
Now if I surfing Ebay fine. It can handle that.

I just bought one for my wife for e-reading and sketching (she's a graphic artist), just the basic 4th gen 16gb wi-fi model on sale at the Apple Store on Friday. I'm no Apple fanboy in the least, but I must admit, this thing really is a highly-polished piece of hardware. The screen is beautiful and the interface is slick. I'm very impressed with it so far and she loves it. Heck, even the box it shipped in was nice. Only time will tell if it was worth the $500 spent on it.

The google Nexus 10 has a marginally better screen and somewhat poorer battery life, but would be a good option if looking to avoid the apple trade space, and IF the apps the family wanted were available in a tablet-friendly form.

I personally think the 7" type sized tablet (e.g. Ipad mini) is where it's at, so the kindle fire HD is most interesting to me (though I have an iPad 3 so I'm all set).

But IMO the apple product is more polished and really the nicer unti from handling and using both. To some, the $100 difference might be a major consideration, but if you're actually spending (wasting?) money on a tablet, $100 isn't really any big thing IMO, for getting the top product versus something else. If $100 is a big deal, the buyer should probably reconsider spending $3-500 on a tablet and buy a more functional loss leader laptop instead.

IMO tablets are a luxury. It's great to see competition, but IMO the OP made a great choice for something the family will love, and will make a great gift.

I use my ipad to check mail or web at lunch when I don't bring my Mac Book Pro home. Also listen to music and read books on it. But the Grandkids, nieces and nephews all come over to spend hours on it.

I have my car manuals on it, so it is easy to have with me in the garage while rebuilding things.

I never thought the iPad was meant to replace a laptop. More to supplement it.
