Borgeson steering shaft

Has anyone here installed a Borgeson replacement intermediate steering shaft in their Chevy PU?

It's supposed to stop that maddening steering system clunk noise that plagues all late model Chevy pickups. The cost is a little over $200.

I wouldn't mind paying that if the part is as good as they say it is.

Please give all comments, good or bad.

What truck and year?
I thought that Chevy came out with a replacement shaft and superlube that elimates that problem also. The OEM part might even be cheaper then Borgeson. You need to talk to a tech and/or service writer. They should find the most recent PN or TSB on it!

I had to replace the one on my 2001 Dodge under warranty, and the new updated one never made the clunk. It's been over 3 years since it's been on the truck.
 
I had a 2000 Tahoe that had that problem.

The dealer was aware of the situation and they lubed the shaft and that solved the problem.

Did not take them very long either.
 
It's a 2005 regular cab short box work truck. We're talking a base truck all the way..not one option on it!! As such it does have a tilt wheel and AM/FM radio and air. It has the 4.3 V6 engine with a New Venture 5 speed gear box with 3.23 gears.

I've already had the shaft replaced once and within 5,000 miles the clunk was back. I eased on down to fullsizechevy.com and from I can glean from hanging around there the steering shaft is a very common problem. There was a guy on FSC.com that put a zerk fitting on his steering shaft to keep it lubed and (hopefully) not clunking. Another took the bull by the horns and removed his shaft, washed the lubricant out of it and then repacked it with slow curing epoxy - he filled it up with the epoxy, installed the thing in his truck and then let it sit over the weekend so not to disturb it while it cured. He guarantees that his shaft is not clunking!!Of course he no longer has a collapseable steering column, but at least the clunk is gone.

By the way my wife's 2002 Tahoe has had the clunk since about 10,000 miles (it now has 105,000) and she doesn't care enough to get it fixed - after seeing how long the "fix" lasted on my truck, I don't blame her!!!Cheers all!
 
Acording to some of the GM truck forums the Borgeson will start clunking worse than the stock shaft. Most of the people that purchased them ended up returning them.

Gm has a new shaft that is sealed and is correcting the problem. Most dealers are putting this new shaft in under warenty. You can also purchase the new shaft form GMpartsdirect for $66.54 that includes shipping. The part# is 19153614. Its a 15 minute job to install it.

One of the Chevy truck message boards has the procedure, with pics, of how to grease or repair the intermediate steering shaft.

Take care with not allowing steering wheel to move since too much movement can cause pain-in-the-rear problems.

Also, take care since that air bag is in there.
 
I installed one a few months ago.
It is OK.
I already had the warranty shaft done, and it will rattle when the lube runs out just like the original.
The Borgeson is better than an unlubed factory shaft, but not as good as a freshly lubed factory shaft.
IF it stays the same over the 5 year warranty period I would say the following:
DIY'ers, stay with factory shaft and lube it.
Short fat bald lazy types like me, go with the Borgeson.
If it starts to rattle any worse, it is useless. Time will tell.

I wouldn't epoxy the shafts together under any circumstances. The shaft will stick through your chest if it can't collapse. I think the clunk would be a little less annoying than that.
