Bolt in transmission drain bung

They will always stick up inside the pan so you will not get 100% draining. If I really did not want to pull the pan and get a bung welded in I would use them. I've seen the reccommended a few times here on BITOG.

I think they are called "bulkhead fittings".

Maybe easier to just buy an aftermarket trans pan w a drain plug already installed. Otherwise the bolt on ones will work as long as it doesn’t leak

Look for a dorman pan, its one of the few decent products (there are some others) they make.
If you are using it to reduce spillage to remove the pan and change the filter or after a new filter doing a drain and fill with every or every other OCI its a good thing IMO.
It is not a substitute for removing the pan for filter changes and pan cleaning.

You are all overlooking the obvious. You can drain out enough to not make a mess when you drop the pan. That alone is worth a lot.

I hear conflicting things about the Dorman pans. That they are thin and bend easily allowing leakage. I was looking into one for my 4T65E. After dropping the pan, I went without because it was pretty easy and not really messy.

There’s the single important purpose it serves. Not such a big deal on a lift but when you’re on your back, PRICELESS.

Any thoughts on the Dorman pan with drain plug? Looks like I can get it for $30 locally... but I don’t want to spend $30 to install a headache.

Think it depends on the whole plan … I put one in with the intention of adding a remote filter at half the microns and magnets … since doing so … pan has stayed much cleaner … I used to drain 5 (messy) quarts … now just 4 … but it takes me only
20 minutes to do that drain/fill and change Fram Ultra once a year …
I don’t like the nylon washers … so used copper …

Interesting idea with the brass reducers, but I don’t know if you can weld that in place? I’m sure you could flow some solder with a torch but I don’t know if I would trust that.

I brazed mine in. Local garage/friend could do it if you dont have torch

I have not install a lot of them but the ones I have installed were all okay. My suggestion would be to go have a look at it, if its good buy it. If its thin a rice paper and poorly finished then pass, I suspect Dorman uses more than one supplier, they don't make anything that I know of anymore.
