Hello team BITOG! I need your help with some direction on a little (I hope) issue with my Miata.

First off, I have a relatively new to me 91 Miata that has 175k, that up until this past week has been running well. I have been restoring the cosmetics of it over the summer.

While driving home the other day, the car started losing power, although it is not strong in general anyway. I had the A/C on, the car was hesitating at idle. In the last mile or so of a 10 mile trip, I heard the faint sound of pinging. All gauges were normal (oil pressure was fine and coolant temp was normal). When I arrived home, I heard a boiling sound and found the coolant in the reserve tank boiling.

I let the car cool, and parked it in the garage, and there it sits (it is an extra vehicle). I checked all of the fluids, all levels are normal and I don't readily see oil in the coolant nor coolant in the oil. The oil has maybe 300 miles on it.

Here is what I have done to the car mechanically thus far (prior to this issue).

New NGK plugs and wires (the blue ones).
New valve cover gasket and CAS (camshaft angle sensor) seal.
***after replacing these, I still have a sizable oil leak that the car has had since purchase- the VCG was toast and it was easy to spot the many leakage area's)***
Converted the non-working A/C to 134a and blows nice and cold
LOF with Castrol High Mileage 5w30 and pure one.

Outside of this new issue- the car is rock solid and drives great. I have not started it since the boiling occurred. The radiator looks newer to the car- although the PO had not replaced it in the past couple of years that she owned it.

Before I start throwing parts at it.. any ideas? Where to start? My thoughts were radiator cap and t-stat.

Thanks!

Normally if they got hot enough to lose power and ping the headgasket is done for too. Especially with an Aluminum head. The cause could be many things. sSat, fan clutch, blown hose, water pump impeller etc.

What about the coolant? How old is it and are you using a premixed 50/50 or did you mix it yourself. If you did yourself how much is coolant and how much water.

Not sure of the age of the coolant. I have only had the car a few months and have not swapped that fluid yet. Transmission was next on my list and then coolant. Well, that apparently has changed now. The coolant that is there looks clean and green.

What is an easy (if there is an easy way) to test if the head gasket has failed?

Maybe if you are lucky just the radiator pressure cap is bad. That doesn't explain why it was hesitating at idle, but it could explain coolant boiling out into the reservior and light pinging because the cooling system wasn't under enough pressure and was developing localized steam pockets. You could have headgasket seal issues though.

What I dont understand is, if it was hot enough to boil the coolant in the tank. Why didnt it show hot on the temp gauge?

The temp gauge sender could be bad. Pretty common on Miatas.

It might not be boiling at all. If the HG is blown, then you could be pushing combustion gasses out of the pressure relief valve and into the overflow bottle... I've seen it... 7MGTE in the Supra... the king of BHGs.

Most OEM gauges are functionally idiot lights. They lull in the middle range for a very wide range of temperature/pressure, etc., because otherwise, stupid people would call up the warranty desk and ask what's wrong, and that costs money.

Thanks guys. I am going to start with the cheap things first this weekend and see what it does. New radiator cap and thermostat for grins and hope for the best. I'll report back...
