"No, I'm pretty sure it's 10w30."

So who knows what's been going in it. I strongly recommended the Mobil 1 0W-40. We'll see if that fixes the issue.

It is probably the BMW 5w30.

He's already got to replace the chain in the transfer case. I hope to be able to help him, so I can experience this German engineering/serviveability for myself.

Oil pressure is nothing but an indicator of resistance to flow. Less resistance (high bearing clearance, high flow oil filter, etc), less pressure. The cams and crank ride on a film of oil not the actual bearing. If it lost enough oil and pressure when it broke the first time, it doesn't take much contact time for a bearing to get opened up.

An oil filter has nothing to do with oil pressure. Sending units are typically after the filter, but even if it weren't the affect would be minimal.

I beg to differ. A high resistance in the oil filter will show a drop in oil pressure after the filter up until bypass pressure is reached. Then system pressure will then be whatever the bypass pressure setting is. That's neither here nor there though. The oil filter was used as an example of system operation, not pointing towards a problem. Nitpicking pieces out of posts is not helpful.
