Could be 2nd generation too. They just had very good Torsen AWD. 1st generation regardless of engine had center locker,4LO. Higher trims could have rear locker and some front too. With air suspension they could do almost 13” clearance.
Yup, they used to run river trail off-roading on the island and it would have no trouble getting anywhere.
 
The V10 Diesel Touareg was nuts. A low range and could tow a house. The only downside is that if it needs any maintenance you have to practically take the front end apart.
It's actually drop the engine and trans on a special lift, but yeah, taking the front end off is part of that. One of the easier parts.
 
No one is off roading with $150,000 vehicle.
BMW off roader is already kind of available, Ineos.

I know a guy and his wife who take their Earthroamer on 4wd trails. At least ones that it fits on. It's close to 10x that price.

So yes, people do take 150k+ vehicles on 4wd trails.

Hey the first and second gen X5 are pretty good with decent tires, as is the Touareg.

Compared to what? A Rav4 or Subaru? Cool.

No one is off roading with $150,000 vehicle.
BMW off roader is already kind of available, Ineos.

Not quite $150k but LX700h Overtrail (which is an actual off road capable vehicle) is about $120k and plenty of those buyers are off roading them.

Colorado has 100,000 miles of unpaved mountain roads, I yet to see one.
 
Probably won't touch a Wrangler off road lol. If it doesn't have low range it won't be a true off roader. If they can do low range and match Land Rover's cross linked air suspension that'll be as good as you can get without solid axles. If it's a real off-roader it'll need aftermarket support for extra armor (rock sliders etc) and winch mounting options. There's a guy with a second gen tourag in my off road club, does alright for not having low range, but still an interesting choice. Can't do much of the rocks and anything steep has to get a running start, no just idling up for him I suppose.

The running start clowns are the ones tearing up the trails. Get an appropriate vehicle and the trail can be traversed without wheelspin and momentum. They are also more likely to damage their own vehicle. That's the main reason incapable soft-roaders like Subarus, are banned on more and more trails.

A real off-roaders would have the same axle design as the H1 or G-Wagon. /S

Lots of ways to describe “off road” - but as Jeep what’s his name shows in the picture - making contact with 4 tires on uneven trails - very much is still a solid axle thing …
