BMW M5 tires

There is no way you can label all those tires as better than even the old style PS2. You are painting with too broad a brush!

I have personally worn out a dozen sets of old Pilots on Vettes, I used to spend a lot of time on road courses. They were (are) a terrific tire, but I've worn them off in as little as 6000 miles of street driving! And that was on a lightweight car.

Almost anyone who is familiar with them will tell you that Goodyear F1's are a great tire as long as the road is warm and dry, but they suck in almost any other type of road conditions.

Those same aforementioned BMW forums also will give you an earful on Bridgestones!

Can we agree that tires are like fine wine? Many flavors, perhaps one for everyone.

I like the wine analogy. Another way in which it works: you need to match the wine to the meal or it doesn't make sense -- although there are some wines that are a lot more versatile than others.

Tires are like wine in that there are some good ones for cheap, and one does in fact pay a lot more for a specialty or name brand.

Affordable tires do not always mean losing traction

I have very cheap tires. Fierce. Less than 1/2 the price of the Bridgestone Potenzas that preceded them and even less expensive than the General Exclaims that immediately preceeded them.

They do everything in the dry that the Potenzas did, are better in the wet than both the Exclaims or Potenzas, and have already outlasted both of the "better" tires.

But they are noisy. Everytime I rotate them, I expect to find a bad wheel bearing. It's just tire noise.

I got all the performance and more from a US made tire that I got from the Japanese and Czech brand name tires. Instead of $200+ for the Bridgestones or $120+ for the Generals, I paid a little more than $80 apiece. But they are just too noisy. If I was in my 20s, that wouldn't bother me...[heck], it probably wouldn't have bothered me in my 30s. But it annoys me now.

If you can tolerate the noise, Fierce might be worth investigating. Or maybe I just got an exceptionally noisy batch.

A few years ago, the european car crowd were clamoring about how well Korean Nexens worked on their cars. Also worth a look. If nothing else, just to rule them out as an option

OK, I have to make a partial retraction here. The car still loses traction in 3rd. Just not as easily. But I've had it happen starting a pass. It appears to really depend on the road surface.

These tires still suck.

The Dunlop Star Spec is one of the tires designed for competition wherethe sanctioning body specs a DOT tire with a minimum treadwear number in the 180-200 range. Others in the same category are the Bridgestone RE-11, the Hankook R-S3, and the Yoko AD08.

...and the past 'king of the class', the Falken RT-615/615K.

I want to take a moment and thank everybody for all their help.

Based on the advice I got here, and what I've read on the M5 board, I'm going with the Michelin Pilot Super Sport.

These are apparently the replacement for the PS2's and they are thought very highly of.

Michelin Pilot Super Sport is a good choice for your M5. The Super Sport is better than PS2 in all categories, from wet and dry performance to ride comfort and tread wear, the bonus is it costs about $350 less per set.

Usually, the latest tires are better in almost all categories than previous generation. PS2 was best 3-4 years ago then Continental ExtremeContact DW took the first place in the survey 2 years ago, now Super Sport is much better than DW.

OK, so a bit of an update....

The front tires (T1R's) are decent. I don't dislike them.

The back's.... The T1 Sports are USELESS. Particularly now that it has cooled a little. 2nd gear rolling... hit the gas to accelerate, and you are roasting them. 3rd is almost as bad, you have to be careful in 1st through 3rd, it is OK in 4th.

Can't wait for the back's to wear out to put some Pilot Super Sport's on there. ARG!

And here's the bad news... depending on the size you want the newest Pilots are NOT AVAILABLE!

I bought Hankook Ventus V12's and they are dynamite!

I looked them up for my car, the SS is about $100 less per tire than the PS2? Is the PS2 still the top sticky street tire? Treadwear of 300 vs 220.

If the SS handles like the PS2 and wears better and costs less I will buy them in an instant.

Not in my sizes. I was shopping for 275/40/20. And I wouldn't buy from Tire rack if they were the last supplier on earth!

And I'm not talking PS2's. Those are everywhere.

I don't buy from there either, but it is a good place to check availability.

I"m looking for 18's. And no, not the PS2's either.

Where do you buy tires from? Why not Tire Rack? I just got some tires from Tire Rack and my experience was good, that's why I'm curious to know why your experience has been bad.

I buy mine through Ford. They are the least expensive and do a great job.
