So my annual free oil changes are finally done and will be doing my first in a few months. Stocked up on oem filters, but was wondering about oil choices. Factory is BMW 0w-30 LL01-FE, but since 2020(?) the dealers are also approved to also use 0w-20 LL-17 FE+. My car has only had the BMW 0w-30 for each annual change.

Note: This is my third car in a rotation of three and only driven about 2k miles per year. It is the N63TU2 and does have a stage 1 tune and hub dyno is showing around 570-580hp at the crank. Car is driven pretty sedately just the same. Current mileage is 13,000 miles

My daily driver is a 2001 BMW 540 M-Sport with 340,400 miles. I have a ton of QS Euro 5w-40 LL-01 around. I also have a bunch of Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w-30 LL-04 due to the recent rebate offer. Obviously I can continue to use factory BMW 0w-30, but would there be a reason to simply use one of the two I have a lot of on the shelf?? Would either of the two oils I have now, be considered superior (higher HTHS) than the factory fill? Is LL-04 considered "better" than LL-01 in general?

Use both LL01 and LL04. LL04 is low-SAPS oil compatible with DPF/GPF. Basically it is LL01 version for vehicles equipped with particulate filters. In EU N63 is recommended for LL04 not LL01.
Both LL01 and LL04 have minimum HTHS of 3.5 cP. LL01FE has minimum 3, maximum 3.49cP. So yes, both LL01 and LL04 are better protection wise.

I knew you would have the appropriate answer, backed by facts, thank you.
Is the LL01 versus LL04 worth noting? Is one preferred over the other, if I am not driving a diesel or have a particulate filter?
Sound like the nod may lean toward the QS Euro 5w-40 I have over the PP Euro 5w-30...until I use it up, then maybe jump to Castrol 0w-40 which you seem to give props to.

I would go LL01. Easier to find, cheaper. Out of warranty, you really do not have to use strictly LL01 or LL04. N63 is an older engine. Updates to BMW approvals from 2018 do not affect N63. Use any oil that has MB229.5 or MB229.51/52 approval primarily. That means Mobil1 0W40, Castrol 0W40 etc.
