Blown up CD

A couple of days ago I found an old Led Zeppelin CD that had been in my car for the last couple of years on the back seat somewhere (yes, it's a mess back there). I put it in the CD player and within two songs there were a squashing sounds from the inside of the player. When I ejected the disk, only the plastic part and a few bits of the aluminum foil came out.

The player is now full of aluminum pieces and whenever I hit a bump, they either start shorting the speakers with AM radio like crackling sounds or if it's already crackling, it may stop.

The question is, short of disassembling the dash to take the CD player out, what method would you think might work? I am thinking sticking duct tape in there and pulling it out may catch some of the pieces. The slot is too narrow for a vacuum cleaner to work.

Or, how difficult is to pull the CD player from the previous generation Civic? I can probably find an hour this weekend to spend on that.

Might not be repairable.......decent CD players are $100 + or -

The only thing I would try is remove it from the dash and take the cover off to remove the pieces. Don't know how to remove it on your car.

Then hook wires back up and test before installing it.

The previous generation Civic has, as I recall, a bezel which is held in with a couple of screws at the bottom (behind the ashtray). Remove the bezel and then you can remove the stereo. I helped a friend of mine install a stereo in one a while ago. It wasn't difficult at all.

Did this thing actually scrape the foil layer off the CD???

I think the foil just came off as the disk spun.

Thanks for the info on the screws. I'll check it this weekend.

do those civics have DIN format stereos?

Sort of...you need a dash kit to put a DIN stereo in one.
