I'd like to buy a 50-pack of blank CD-R's.

I've only used Memorex 700MB's so far, and they've been ok: burned about 20 of them, all came out good.(I don't know the max write speed of those).

I was wondering where to find the best deals and which brands are most trusted/best, if others are better than Memorex. (I'll mostly be using these to get MP3 tracks from my PC to them)

Thanks.

memorex are junk... they use a lot of fake taiyo yuden media.

try supermediastore.com or rima.com for media, they use only the best discs with the best media id codes, avoid newegg for blank media, they sell a lot of counterfeit stuff from china when it comes to blank cd's and dvd's

come to think of it, compusa, circuit city, and best buy have also sold counterfeit stuff made in china... thought we were supposed to be all puffy chested and rah rah rah about china pirating our stuff?

I got some Verbatim counterfeits. After a year, the dye had faded and I had trouble reading off the discs.

just got imation dvd-rs (cousin bought them for some movies) from wally world... CMC dye = garbage... then the cd-rs are from "moser baer india ltd" more garbage...

uconn - verbatim are regarded as quite good, one of the best....right now i believe taiyo yuden is making the best dyes, esp dvd-r with the " TYG02 " media ID code, verbatim is real real close in quality... china has a bigtime problem with companies over there copying the media ID codes from reputable companies and making counterfeits over there, then selling them to best buy, circuit city and the like.... i guess newegg too.

you're right, the junk ones will be unreadable as the dye degrades

There is no "best CD/DVD" media, per se.
Drives are made by a number of manufacturers, and those differences, along with the software used to burn, and the operating system of your computer all conspire to make it as difficult as possible.
Buy small batches of a few brands and test.
I use Macs and have good luck with Maxell, Verbatim, and Apple-branded.

Thanks, guys. I wish Taiyo-YUden came in smaller packs..i don't need 100 at the moment.

I found a good deal on Yamaha Professional grade Cd-R's on sale now(official website)...I wonder how those are.

I'm kinda glad I'm not dealing with China direct anymore. The fake everything kinda wears on a fellow....spending every waking minute chasing fake components, phoney coatings, cheezy wire, crappy hardware....

Oh sorry, Maxell has been OK for me.

not to be taken as gospel:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/buyerguides/buymedia.htm
http://www.videohelp.com

basically the media coming from Japan especially, Tawain and Singapore is best. MCC = mitsubishi chemicals corp. and yuden media are considered tops. Most verbatim is MCC.

CMC Magnetics is hit or miss. I had problems with TDK 8x dvd+r which is CMC media, got 50 for $15 from compusa. Turned out to be the philips dvd8631 burner which is a known problem from dell. I got it replaced with a newer philips, burns them fine now at 8x. So while media quality has a lot to do with it, don't overlook your dvd/cd burner if you have burn problems.

A great site for cd/dvd burner firmware if you are having problems, or just want your burner to burn better and recognize more media:
www.rpc1.org

also, you can download for free from videohelp.com, Nero infotool and cdspeed. It will read the media ID code on a cd or dvd and tell you what read/burn speeds your drive will support. With that info, look it up the reviews at videohelp.com.

Hmm... according to Nero infotool and the digitalfaq site, Circuit City sold me a bunch of fake Sony CD-Rs last year.

Best is Mitsubishi/Verbatim Super Azo, also Indian made Moser Baer last and burn good quite well.

Thanks for that great info.
I also got the Nero infotool, and according to that my Maxell cd-r's are also just CMC, and the scan showed all red(bad)...somehow they wrok pretty ok.

UPDATE:

went to Walmart and found a 25-pack of Maxell CD-R Pro. made in Japan. (There were some made in Taiwan ones, too) not really cheap, cost me $10.00

came home and scanned them with the Nero Cdspeed: made by: Taiyo-Yuden! HAPPY!
manufacturer id: 97m24501f

so if you guys can find it, this seems to be a good deal. (there were 50-packs, too, a better deal, but I didn't get them because I wanted to test them 1st, and I didn't need that many Cd-R's)

I wonder who makes the Taiwan made maxells..
