Bought two gallons of Motorcraft Green Conventional coolant with "Bittering Agent". What is this? I have used this coolant for over ten years now. There was no reference to this on other gallon jugs I purchased in the past.

It's been added to lots of antifreeze brands in the past few years. Keeps cats, dogs, kids, and hillbillies from drinking it. Works well as a diagnostic tool, too. Think the oil has coolant in it, but not sure? Give it a taste...

The substance is called "Bitrex or Bittrex" (sp). It is insanely bitter and can be added to almost anything to make it unpaletable to any human and most animals.

As I understand, it was first required for coolant sold in Oregon and some coolant makers have chosen to put it in all their product rather than try to control Oregon distribution.

They should be doing that across the board. I've heard of too many mean spirited people purposely poisoning animals, not to mention all the accidental poisonings that happen.

If theya re useing it to get rid of disease carring vermint I have no problem with then useing coolant as the poisin. It really is human since they simply get a very intoxicated drunk feeling and fall aslep and never wake up. My problem with it would be if it is used to harm pet's and the highten risk of children drinking it!!!!

My impression is that death from coolant ingestion is a painful process since your central nervous system is affected.

A few months ago (maybe a year ago) there was a post (I think it was on this forum) from a person looking for a propylene glycol coolant because he did not want to use ethylene glycol coolants anymore after watching his neighbour's dog die a very painful death from coolant ingestion.

Nope the drunken part is only half of the story. The drunkenness goes away once the glycol is processed in the liver to form glycolic acid and one other compound that eludes my memory now. Basically the two compounds spike the bloods pH and start irreversibly destroying the kindeys and also effect the nervous system. So the waste buildups in the blood and you die a nice slow painful death.

Seen it done in the animal lab

I heard that to, then I talked to some folks who like the others mentioned saw their dogs after consuming it. They said the animals looked anything but happily drunk. I use poison for some critters on my job, I research them to see which provide the most humane solution.

I distictly remember my boss telling me to get rid of a bunch of groundhogs on our hillside. Baits never worked on them, and I refused to use illegal traps. He came up with the idea of "lets use crabapples and soak them in antifreeze". I looked up antifreeze and it sounds too slow and painful. I just told him I did it and he never followed up. I didnt have the heart to do it. They still live there today
