Hoping to get some input on good oils to stick with on my Supercharged Lotus. Its got a toyota 2zz engine in it (same as celica) and lotus recommends havoline 5w-40 synthetic, but it seems thats awfully difficult to find, even online. I'm hoping that you can help me narrow down my options as far as oil is concerned. Here's the breakdown of my needs:
1. What kind of vehicles you have
2008 Lotus Exige (supercharged)
2. What your owner's manual says
Engine
At the First After Sales Service
and completion of the running-in period, a fully synthetic 5W/40
oil such as Texaco Havoline Synthetic should be used. This oil
has been tested in all climatic conditions likely to be encountered,
and offers advantages in ease of cranking, smooth cold running
and fuel economy at low temperatures, in combination with good
wear protection at elevated temperatures and at high engine
speeds. If Texaco/Havoline products are not available, an oil
meeting the following specification should be used.
NOTICE: Note that Lotus does not recommend the use of any
oil additives and use of such additives may invalidate the terms
of your car’s warranty.
Viscosity: 5W/40
Quality Standard: API SJEC; ILSAC; ACEA A3
3. Where you live
Chicago,IL
4. How you drive (easy? hard? fast? slow?)
Moderate (a few red lines) around town, autocross a number of times each year, a few HPDE's each year. Car is weekend only pretty much, I don't expect to put more than a few thousand miles on it in any given year.
7. Current mileage/oil used/ miles since last OC
6000/Castrol Syntec 5w-40/1000
Misc: Mobil 1 5w-40 DEO, Castrol Syntec 5w-40, Motul 8100 x-cess seem to be the most popular in the community. Since I won't be driving that many miles per year, OCI doesn't matter to me, but I will be driving hard in autocross and HPDE so want an oil that is going to take the abuse. Right now I'm paying $8/qt for castrol and I'm wondering if I'm doing decent on what I'm getting for my money. Curious if there's better oils for my application.
