Bird Fell Down My Chimney

Heard some bird squaks in my basement a couple of days ago. Today I opened up the cleanout at the bottom of the chimney and found a dead bird.

The masonry chimney is not capped. I plan on installing a cap, like this one

I have lived in this house for over forty years and have never had a bird fall into the chimney. I did have a bat come in through a bathroom exhaust vent and it flew out when I left the entrance door open.

There might be an infection among the local bird population. Three days ago there was a bird on the road standing behind my truck and it did not move even though I walked by within a foot or it. I noticed it had thrown up. I drove off and saw it had been squashed flat by a car when I came back. On the positive side, an instantaneous death it suffered is better than if a cat had gotten it.

Now I feel a bit guilty. I should have let the bird out when I first heard the squaks. I thought he was in the furnace distribution ductwork because that was what it sounded like.
I should have installed a chimney cap a long time ago. Toronto is infested with raccoons and I can see a sick raccoon, unsteady on his feet, or a baby raccoon, falling in. In which case, I will have to wait till the raccoon dies, and then cut him up with my sawzall and extract the pieces through the 5in x 7 in cleanout. Yikes! What a mess that would be with blood spurting out everywhere.
