big 3 decline - related experiment

wow, Im seeing a sad trend here... even if you consider brands lika Mazda that are owned to some extent by a big 3 company... the overwhelming majority is NOT a big 3 product set.

I don't think it's as sad as it may appear at face value.

Some of the highest quality cars are built in the US with high domestic content (Toyota, Honda, and Nissan). I think it points the blame sqarely at poor management.

The reason I'm looking at GM is 1/2 the family runs GM and the other have runs Volvo's.
My sister and her husband have an Eldorado and a Deville. My Mom has a Park Ave. My brother and sister-in-law have a S70 and S60 Volvo. And I have a 745 and a 960 Volvo. All of us have had great luck with our cars. I only have heard of one GM owner with problems. That is a manager of mine that has a 2001 Blazer that has the never ending busted hatch lock. At least every 12 to 18 months they have to break the inside cover to get to the lock mechanism to get the rear hatch open. Other than that everyone I know with a GM has had good luck over the last few years.

the experiment didnt have anything to do with domestic build or domnestic content... it had to do with the question of if to a sampling of the population, a good majority of the cars that one would reasonably purchase if necessary were big 3 products... its not.

What can I say, we like small sports cars. I owned only big 3 cars and trucks for my first 20 years of driving. I got over that, and now only purchase cars that will last. I actually enjoy not making car payments! This may not be fair, but we see big three LONG-TERM quality as poor. Also, until the Saturn Sky, no car by the big three, in our price range, excited us.

I bought my last new car in 1979. I won't ever buy another one. When I get too old to service/repair my own cars, I won't need one.

In a passenger car, it sadly boils down to only one choice, the Mustang. My requirement is simple, but rare. RWD and a manual transmission.
