best way to add manual tranny fluid/diff fluid?

Recently changed manual transmission fluid (GL-4 gear oil) & diff fluid (GL-5 gear oil) in two separate vehicles.

For the transmission fluid, the fill plug was fairly high on the transmission, and there was no way to get a funnel in there. I have a cheap little plastic hand pump that isn't ideal, but didn't see any other way. It did the job.

For the van, there was enough room above the pumpkin that I was able to bend a long-necked plastic funnel enough to get it in place with the opening sticking more up than down. Had room to pour from the AMSOIL 1 qt bottles into the funnel.

I would like to buy a better pump - the plastic one's inlet & discharge hoses are just pressed into grommets on the body, and tend to pop off at inopportune times.

The other, low-budget solution might be to buy hose of the right diameter, and be able to pour into a funnel from above.

Who has used what, and what's worked best?

I agree. Changing the fluids with one of those [censored] pumps is HUGE pita!!

I just cut the tips off the oil bottle,stick it in the hole and squeeze it in.

That would have worked with the diff, if the bottles had been the right shape. (Have used them in the past.) The AMSOIL bottles are pretty much the same as for motor oil.

For the transmission, there'd be no room to get a bottle in place anyway. (Used RedLine in the transmission, which was different style again.)

Good thing this is not a job I have to do often!

I've got a funnel and half inch clear plastic hose about 4-5' long.

I make up a wire clip, to hold the funnel as high as I can get it, run the hose into the plug...5L in the Nissan gearbox, I couldn't do that with a pump bottle.

Then when I'm finished, I stuff the end of the hose tightly into the mouth of the funnel so the clean side is always clean...

In really bad ones where access doesn't allow [censored] for filling. Ive taken a hose into filler and attached it to the bottle. Turn said bottle upside down and punch a small hole in the bottom and add small amounts of air. Works every-time. Just have to be careful on holding onto the hose and not to much air. But with that said I never blew a bottle apart though. Your results may vary.

Same here. I do the refill "beer-bong" on tough to access transfer cases/power transfer units. It can be a little slow with gear oil, but it's simple and works.

Yup got mine at az. But for the jeep I just pop the shifter and pour it in.

I had to deal with this exact problem a couple of weeks ago. I read a post on another web site recommending a pump that is designed to fill lower units in boats. The pump screws right on a standard quart bottle and has a short flexible tube attached. I got one at WalMart in the boating section and it worked like a charm. Just Google "pump fits in quart bottle", you'll see what I mean, they're about $10 and well worth it.

I use the same type of pump that Recalculating and Rick in PA use, and I am very happy with that method. The only regret is not buying one with the spring type clip on the end of the hose, to hold it in the fill hole while pumping.

I like the plastic tubing method myself.
You could get a long piece for the trans in the future. As long as the bottle is above the trans it'll flow in.

cut the bottle pour nipple to where a hose just slides INSIDE it, run said hose to bottom of bottle, and other end into transmission.

then poke a hole near the top of the bottle, hook your air compressor up to a blow gun with rubber tip, stick tip into hole, and pressurize bottle, holding onto the hose where it meets bottle.

The air will force oil up tube and into transmission until bottle is almost empty.

This is what I do. Trans is easy to see and get to from the engine compartment. For the rear diff there is a grommet in the trunk I can take out and snake the hose down.

I have bigger version of the little one that fits a quart bottle. It's a plunger pump that screws onto a gallon plastic jug, with a couple feet on 3/8 clear tubing with a little plastic clip to hold it in the fill hole. Pumps easy and fills quick. Don't remember when or how much when I bought it. Less than $15 I'm sure, or I wouldn't have bought it.
