I have been using Amsoil SSO in my 2001 Acura TL for the last 3 oil changes. I do alot of short trips and change the oil ever 6 month. The car has 150k. I dont have my preffered account anymore. So the price of SSO is pretty steep. Any suggestions on what to use?

Has anyone used Edge?

Ultra 5w30, Edge 5w30, or M1 EP 5w30 probably come the closest.

Edge 5w30 on sale is probably your best bet.....

EP must be around? That certainly has the most UOA's supporting it's claims. Still to early for me to trust Ultra at 10,000 mile plus intervals, though the VOA's look good.

I find it strange that Ultra is all over the shelves of the two Walmarts close to my house and none is available in your area. Pennzoil's marketing and distribution continues to confuse me.

Here ya go, this stuff is every bit as good as those expensive synthetic oils.

Multi-viscosity... pfft, who needs that junk? My daddy's cousin's half sister's hairdresser's wife's uncle knew a guy in college who blew up his engine on that synthetic 5w30 stuff!

The local parts concern here is well stocked with all kinds of crazy stuff... 31 flavors of Amsoil in stock, MB & VW coolants on the shelf, every kind of scented RTV you could ever want. IIRC they also had straight SAE 30 & 40 VWB, among other brands.

Why not get with a couple buddies and split the cast and resign as a preferred customer and stay with the SSO. It has taken care of your car this long why change.

I will be shortly, replacing ASM with it. I have to do 6 month OCI's to keep the warranty people happy, and haven't been driving many miles, and want a good synthetic oil. Edge has shown some nice UOA reports, although it is debatable [which I don't care] if it really is an extended drain oil. For me it is a good choice, and in a 0W20 which I'm using the specs look very good. I'll see how it goes.

How about dropping down to Amsoil XL? You seem to like Amsoil and have had good luck( I assume )with the SSO so why not stay with Amsoil? The XL oil is a lot cheaper and can go 6 months. It is rated by the mfg to 7500 but people here have said it can handle up to approx 10K. You said you do short trips so I am thinking under 10K in 6 months? Give Pablo a shout and see what he can get the XL $$$ wise for you.

Otherwise pick any of the name brand synthetics available locally.

The XL line is good oil! In fact, it may be their best all things considered.

For someone who can't bring themselves to a ONE YEAR OCI, they're a great value. When I swap out the HDD in a month or two (one year), I think I might try the XL in the wife's jeep for an endurance test just to see how the two compare. I have no doubt of the HDD handling it with plenty of reserve. I also think that the XL will do the same job just fine over the same time/mile span. I'll probably just sample at 6months without dumping it.
