Best oil for 18HP Vanguard Generator

Hi, I just got a used generator from a friend who owns a generator company. He got it in as a trade. It is about 2 years old and is in great shape.

I want to change the oil in it after the workout I gave it during and after Huricane Frances. Will Chevron Delo 15w40 be to heavy for this application? It did not come with a manual so I am not sure. My friend said to run 10w30 in it but I am a big fan of Chevron oil. If not delo, would Mobil 1 be ok and if so what weight?

Chevron Delo 15w40 will work fine.

Yes, Delo would be good. Mobil 1 would probably be better, either 10w30, 5w40, or 15w40. (does M1 make a 15w40?)

Andrewsreef, assuming you are going to run that Vanguard engine hard in Florida, I think a 30 weight, especially a multi-viscosity mineral oil, is "iffy." I know that's what the manual says, but the manual was written for all climates and not Florida, specifically.

Delo 15w40 seems like a great choice for you. I ran this stuff in all my lawn & garden equipment before switching to Schaeffer's synthetic blend 15w40. Really cut down on the visisble metal I was getting ... although most of that was probably because the motors were fairly new.

ZmOz, Mobil makes a 15w40 mineral (Delvac 1300) and a 5W-40 Delvac 1 and their newest 5W-40 Mobil 1 Truck and SUV.

Last night after running my Honda EU2000i generator for about 60 hours straight, I gave it a break and drained out the GC 0W30 that was put in last fall. Look real good, just slightly darker, could still see the green tint, no signs of metal. I debated filling it with Delvac 1300 or Amsoil 5W30, but instead went with another fill of GC.

Thank you for the info and the link. I beleive this generator only holds 2 quarts or so so I will proably go with the Mobil 1 10w30 as it is easy to get around here (also have not got some Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w40 but I have to special order that).
