I have 135,000 miles on 2004 rav 4 4cylinder and run only mobil 1 5w30 since 20,000 miles of conventional oil. What is the best brand of oil to use? Edge, Mobil 1, Valvoline MaxLife etc? I drive mainly freeway 60 miles round trip to work.

Matt

There is no best oil.

If you're happy with Mobil 1, then keep using it. 8,000 - 10,000 mile intervals should be easy for your driving.

Changed oil. Whatever is the sale oil... which has the best looking bottle.

Almost any oil available outside of the uber-cheap gas-station oil is good oil to use and will work.

You might want to keep running dino or a syn-blend like Valvoline MaxLife because a lot of folks report some oil consumption when switching to Synthetic on a higher-mile dino-only car. I would not worry but a few folk report it.

Just because you drive longer distance and if you want to go the furthest without changing the oil, there is Mobil High Mileage and Extended Performance. Pennzoil Ultra/ QuakerState Ultimate Durability has a strong following as well. Then you have the Amsoil and Redline crowds... If you want to keep with dino, Pennzoil Conventional in the Pennzoil conventional is perhapse the best in the group. Also, do not discredit good old Walmart's Supertech (which is a decent oil, especially for the price). Oh, and Toyota's Motor Oil (in the bottles saying Toyota Genuine Motor Oil) is great.

I personally have a soft spot for Havoline. In addition Advanced Autoparts has 5qts and a filter on sale for $19.99. $2 more gets you a PureOne filter... so that is a good deal.

If you really want to get into which is best... the better gains are with the oil filter.

just like 99% of the cars out there: yours is just like mine (utilitarian), so any brand name motor oil of proper grade will do just fine.

putting syn oil in your RAV4 gives you the bragging rights but doesn't make economic sense, IMO.

My 2c's worth.

Q.

(yes, all my vehicles use either Pennzoil Conventional or Quaker State Conventional...so no bragging rights for me)

If sticking with 5w30 I'd say Pennzoil Platinum or Quaker State Ultimate Durability.
2004 Rav 4 is also specced for 5w20 and 0w20.
Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5w20 / Pennzoil Platinum 5w20.
0w20-TGMO.

Did this motor get back-rated for 10k OCI's? If so, I'd probably run TGMO, if only because I wouldn't feel like searching for the "best" oil, it's what the dealers use, and it seems to be an ok oil by most accounts. Or stick with Mobil, had I gone that route. Why change?

If it wasn't rated for 10k, or I didn't feel like going past 5k, I'd pick something cheap(er).

It's about two oil changes per year, I probably wouldn't sweat it.
