Ok, probably discussed before and I know the marketing hype of PP. My buddy has a 2000 Nissan Frontier pkp with I believe the 6 cyl. He called me today asking about engine pricing. Seems that he has an oil leak and has neglected his OCI a "bit". I said what, 5k, 10k? He doesn't know. I told him (other than an oil change with a high mileage oil) to do nothing until I could get a look at it to see where it's leaking from. So, IF we find the leak and can repair it, and IF he's sludged it up (besides Auto Rx), what can we use to clean it up a bit? Short OCI's with....?

Id run a HDEO
If your running short OCI, Ford Motorcraft Semi Syn (low cost) or PP (Great cleaning)
i wouldn't do any of that.
at this point your friend has already messed up.if he does anything drastic,it's possible he may have serious problems suddenly.
check and see if it's badly sludged up.if it is,i'd have him stock up on some decent quality regular conventional oil and do short OCIs at about 1k miles apart....like 3 or 4. after that,a good quality oil and normal milage OCI and hope for the best.

just regular $3(or on sale for less) oil should be fine.modern oils tend to have lots of detergents anyway. stick with the recommended viscosity.
maybe on the 4th short OCI he should use something like auto-rx.
at this point,the engines going to see some wear anyway from "stuff" that was on there protecting it but this can't be helped.
if it's not all that bad,just do 2 or 3.

That mix for 3000 miles will do a nice job cleaning, and save some $$$$.

I would do that as well, high end and expensive synthetic changed very often for an engine that may be on it's last leg is a waste of money at this point.
I would use synthetic oil once the cleaning with HDEO and MMO was done and the engine is running failry well.

I'd probably go with 85% Pennzoil conventional and 15% MMO. Multiple, short OCI of 1-2k. I'd be careful of going with too much cleaning at once.

After the repair and treatment Mobil 1 with short intervals like 1000 miles for the first one or two then 7500 mile after that.
I need to knock some sense into him, literally. Since it has been nasty the past few days, I haven't been able to get a look at it. My concern is, as others have said, introducing too much at once. My thought (and confirmed by some) was very short OCI's with a good oil to gently clean any crud. I want to say he has something like 150k+. I hope it isn't too late. He didn't mention and issues (knocking, low oil pressure, etc) issues so I am hoping for the best. Sounds like the HDEO and MMO will be the best for now. I haven't looked at the specs but I am assuming the engine calls for a 10W-40 so that mix should work fine. He will NOT spend the cash on a syn. He says he feels inadequate when he's around my car. Go figure.
Best cleaning oil, I'd have to go with Redline, M1 or PP OR you could get a good conventional like Pennzoil Conventional and add 1/2 a bottle of Seafoam and let it do its magic.
I`m not so sure adding things to oil like that is a good idea. First off,it already has enough additives in it. Sometimes it might even be worse using additives in the oil,because it will hinder the additives already in the oil.
