I buy a lot of EVs. Easily over a hundred a year.
I also have owned nearly everything, and given at least one model to my wife for her daily driving duties. Except for the Tesla Model X, the Tesla Roadster and the Cybertruck. She has even driven three MiEVs (look that one up) along with nearly every older compliance EV of the prior decade. All of which you should avoid like herpes.
If you want to go cheap, that's fine. I have bought plenty of LEAFs and they pretty much rule the roost when it comes to low cost.
But as much as I like them, they wouldn't be my first choice anymore. Even for a cheap vehicle.
I would get a Bolt instead. Everything is better. Longevity. Safety. Range. Interior quality. Visibility. Features. For a few thousand more you can have a long-term keeper that's worth a daily drive.
Make sure to get it 2020 or newer if you're opting for cloth seats. The seats in older cloth Bolts are so badly padded that your family may not enjoy it at all.
The Leather-ish seats in the Premier and higher end versions are well worth it for comfort.
Level one charging is absolutely fine for local driving. My wife kept one for three years and never had an issue. Even with a ton of local driving for pet sits and errands.
The Tesla is too much car for a young driver. The bZ / Solterra is an interesting alternative as is the Ariya. But for local family use with the occassional drive in the regional metro, the Bolt is the best choice for a young driver.
