Look closer at Page Plus. You don't have to get a phone from them. You can use any Verizon branded phone provided it's not a prepaid phone, iPhone, or blackberry. Also 4GLTE phones dont play nice if you use data. Page plus uses Verizon's prepaid network. You pay only the plan prices on the website. No extra tax or anything. They have a $10 standard plan that gives you 100 minutes for FOUR months, and if you renew before it expires you keep your minutes.
I switch plans monthly if I need more data, or set up auto pay and let it ride for a few months at a time.
Oh and did I mention you can use almost any verizon phone? Look for nice used android phones at cowboom.com
Straight talk could throttle your data usage if you go much over 2GB in a given month. So much for unlimited.

I was using Virgin but with all the motorcycle riding especially in the mountains, too many areas with no service. And service was 1-2 bars at home - weak.
Early this year switched to Verizon. Since I hardly use the phone, I top $30 every 3 months. Unused time rolls over adding up, and now I get service where I need it. Ended up with a better phone too that was on sale cheap. I still like the flip style.
When it comes to phones, I'm cheap. Don't use it much so all I need is to make a call or answer a call, & hang up. Don't use the other bells & whistles.

I have a 30 day trial period and can cancel for a complete refund. But, right now I'm satisfied with the CC plan flexibility, coverage and customer service has been very good, responsive to my questions. I'll likely keep it awhile and perhaps look at PT down the road.
The title of this thread is likely too general, for my use and needs, CC and now also PT look to be the best fit.
