I would not feel bad about running a good syn in any of the engines that was mentioned. I would not run a 40W oil though.
I have ran 15w40 HDEO in the old Briggs lawnmowers and never once had any problems. I don't see what is wrong with using a 40 weight oil in them.

I'd like to know this as well. Any problem running 40's in these air cooled splash lube engines?

I'm a bigger fan of running cheaper plain dino at more frequent intervals in my OPE. Most have rudimentary air filters and few have any oil filtration. Briggs "recommends" synthetic, but stops short of requiring it. I'd buy a huge jug of Rotella 30W or 15w40 and change it at 25-50 hour intervals.

If money is not a variable your worried about, Then Rotella T6 in everything. Personally i would run regular rotella 15w40 in everything except the snowblower. Last winter, i ran rotella 15w40 in my garden tractor and had no problems starting up and running fine in 20F weather. If it got much colder than that though, i would switch to a xw30 or something.

Running Mobil 1 TDT 5w40 in my Scag zero-turn with the Briggs 26 ELS. Also running it in my Kawasaki Prairie 650 ATV twin-cylinder.
