Bentley engine assembly

I'm not up on my VAG W12 engine, but there appears to be two different engine types shown:

0:00-5:28 - Conventional engine with exhaust exiting to turbocharges on the outside of the engine
5:28-9:45 - Hot-V engine with exhaust exiting to turbochargers in the valley
9:45-12:24 - Back to the conventional engine

The biggest visual cue is at 9:45. When the shot changes, you can really see the different in where the exhaust goes.

I think the engine from 5:218-9:45 is actually a 4.0L V8, not a W12. No W12 uses a hot-V configuration and the V looks to be a wider angle (90 degree for the V8 vs. 72 degrees for the W12).

I have 2 distinct thoughts.

1. Totally cool and exotic for sure, super clean plant working at a sane pace. I want one.

2. I want my friend (with a hot sister) to have one not me. Holy cow what a complex piece of kit, a turbo small block has probably less than half the parts and runs just as well and can actually be fixed.

Cool videos. Having driven both the 12 cyl and newer 8 cylinder they both feel very refined and have plenty of torque to get the heavy vehicles moving. I know saving money isn’t synonymous with buying a Bentley but the V8 is just fine and leaves money for a minivan for the Au Pair or housekeeper.

I've thought of an W8 Passat or W12 A8. Got to have money for those but.. if going for the "biggest" engine, the W is.. interesting. And then there's the W-16 a la Veyron.

W8 in a Passat "only" made 270HP and from what I hear, owners with a V6 (VR6?) it is *almost* as fast and WAY more serviceable.

Passat and it’s audi cousin had a pretty gutless V6, the 00-02 S4 got upgraded with two turbos. Our shop owner had a station wagon pushing 600 at the wheels on a totally stock long block.

The 1.8 4cyl turbo can also push into the 400s without too much trouble.

Beautiful engines. Seem unnecessarily complicated. In a ten years one will end up in a broken 'Hoovie' and parked immobile at the 'Wizard's' garage.
