Posting online isn't really writing. It's conversational communication in written form. Many formalities and rules have been, or will be lost. A new vernacular has developed and it will continue to be influenced by online participation... and vice-versa.

Exactly, if I were writing a paper, I would choose a different style.

But we are engaged in a conversation, so the style is more akin to speaking, not writing for our high school language arts teacher.
