In the process of doing the timing belt job on the GTI, I had to remove the accessory belt tensioner. I noticed that the bearing in the roller is shot. You can hear the balls inside the sealed catridge bearing rattling around. Not good.
I noticed a clicking sound coming from the engine in the tensioner area last summer, but couldn't isolate it. I believe the shot bearing is what I was hearing. In the spring of the same year, I had cleaned the engine with Purple Power degreaser. I'm sure quite a bit of the degreaser got on the tensioner, and I think enough got to the bearing, that it seeped in & slowly diluted the grease in the bearing, eventually depleting most of the grease.
Before I put 2 & 2 together, I also had a similar problem with the bearings in two bicycle freewheels. I had cleaned the gear cassette with degreaser & the degreaser got into the freewheel & killed those bearings.
Although I can't prove this is what killed my VW's tensioner roller, I believe this is what happened. So, be careful if you use degrease when you clean your engines. Cover any parts that have bearings, or you just might have the same problem I did.
