Yea, everything is great until the account is frozen because of something and then you have no access to any of the money until the issue is resolved.

I've known people that this happened to, in one case a buddy had his account with tens of thousands of dollars tied up for almost 3 months. Yes, he never lost a dime. But he ended up paying late fees on bills that he couldn't pay. Also, any automatic payments were declined.

How Ebay or Paypal can freeze your private checking/saving account with another Bank/Credit Union ? The worst they could do is withdraw the disputed amount from your checking/saving account until problem is resolved.

More anti phishing info (not relevant to OP, thankfully:)

Some links that "look good" with the mouseover test use a cryllic letter that nearly or exactly resembles a "normal" one. It will resolve to a completely different IP. Newer browsers bump non-standard-ASCII letters to a bunch of symbols to alert you.

Also beware of keyloggers; if you think something is up with ebay go find a virgin computer and log in from there. Similarly, virus ridden computers infect the browsers, both the address bar and google searching for ebay's phone number.

When I get emails from ebay, they use my real given name, not my username. Even if it's one of their incessantly nagging "list for free" solicitations.

You're a brave man. I have a second account linked to Paypal that I keep $10 in, and it's used only for Paypal transfers. If my Paypal account gets hacked, if Paypal decide to pull funds out for a chargeback or something crazy, they aren't getting much.

I have been on eBay since the 90's, and Paypal since it's inception and haven't run into any major issues, but not taking any chances with all the horror stories I read online.

To me the fees have gotten totally out of control, so I usually try CL for anything first.

Heard too many stories of things going wrong with paypal . Same here , I will not link my main bank account with them anymore .

Just google problem with paypal or the like....tons of situations that have gone wrong out there .

If you stay on top of your stuff and keep everything under control, how can anything go horribly wrong just outta the blue?

Paypal (as well as my bank) has policies against unauthorized use. If the account gets hacked and runs up a nice tab, a quick call to Paypal and my bank and I'll have the funds back in a jiffy. The bank I have linked to my Paypal account is extremely strict when it comes to this type of thing and they protect their members very well, from the reviews I've read online about the bank.

Regarding the fees... just like insurance companies spread the rates across the board because of BAD DRIVERS and we all end up paying for it in the end, ebay does the same thing... We're paying for all the scammers and all the bad sellers with our fees. ebay has to cover up a lot of mistakes and refunds from scams out of pocket, to keep the buyers happy. ebay has also had to hire TONS more employees to keep up with the growing market place. Someone has to pay for the employees that answer the phone and those who deal with everything that goes within ebay daily.

I personally can count a good 10-15k where I got scammed over the years. The seller vanished and Paypal refunded the funds after a lengthy case. If the seller took the cash out, who do you think refunded my funds...?

Those "internet stories" don't scare me. I can google a ton of every day bank stories, where stuff went wrong for the account holder. Does that mean I shouldn't have a bank account / credit cards and should sleep with all my cash under the mattress / pillow? Come on, get real.

Out of the hundreds or thousands of cases gone wrong, there are MILLIONS of members on ebay who are successful and problem free. Think of it like those ebay sellers with tons of feedbacks... even though they have 1,000 negative feedbacks, their overall score is still 98-99% positive feedback, just like ebay. There may be a few who aren't happy with how their transactions went but there are a BILLION transactions daily that go through without any hiccups.

I absolutely refuse to use Paypal under any circumstances...just too many horror stories. Not worth the risk. (Note: that site was started by someone I know personally and whom Paypal screwed out of about $3500.)

It's all good until something happens. The intelligence behind a proactive approach seeks to neutralize any problem in the future.
Hours on the phone correcting a problem? No thanks.

Yes, Paypal sucks. They might not come into your checking account to steal money, but they will charge against your balance, cancel your account and really [censored] you off. I was a seller and the Post Office didn't deliver an item in time. I had proof that I shipped it. Paypal sided with buyer despite evidence presented and a disclaimer in my ebay ad that stated I could not be responsible for items lost/delayed by the Post Office.
ebay seller fees have also gotten outrageous and I despise having to use either service now.

Sharing.....

PayPal's shipping label detail page can mislead people into adding insurance when not needed...

If your package is valued less than $50 and you ship USPS Priority Mail you don't need to "add insurance" for the value of the item....but...
...if you do click "add insurance for item value" because PayPal requires insurance, there is an ADDED CHARGE for insurance (????), even if the value of the package is LESS THAN $50...

...the shipper is SUPPOSED to click the CALCULATE link next to the WEIGHT windows (even though the link does not indicate that doing so calculates the cost)...but doing so the calculation DOES NOT INDICATE that insurance has been included at no cost (even though free tracking is indicated)...

That may persuade someone to ADD insurance (at an unnecessary cost) when not needed...

I was banned from Pay Pal for LIFE and Since Pay Pal and Ebay are basically the same or somthing.

I was so upset..... I have a legit bussiness and I really never kept $ in Pay pal.

If I made 5$ I would send it to my bank... However I was paying lots of taxes b.c each time I sent the $ to my bank it was considered capital gain or somthing to that effect.

So I talk to a pay pal agent and they advised that I leave funds in my pay pal account and use my Pal Pal debit card on things like GAS and FOOD and Hotel Rooms for travel and computer parts and anything that was business related.

Well when I got up to like 3000$ in my pay pal account they LOCKED IT!!!

They made me wait 180 days aka 6 months before I could get the $ out.. plus I was not allowed to get $ or send $... They would not tell me the reason why they suspended my pay pal account for LIFE. I asked them can you please tell me why so I can defend myself and they said NO.

So I never use pay pal or eBay....

It really sucks b/c pay pal is so integrated into our online experience.

All I have to say is thank god for WePay and Square up.

WePay i think is better then pay pal. Also POPMONEY...

However stay away from Pay pal.

I heard of pay pal / ebay horror stories before and figured it would never happen to me b/c I was doing nothing wrong. I have a federal tax ID and my company is legally INC.

I was shocked when pay pal did that.

so if you do have a pay pal account do not leave even 1 dollar in it.

Yeah I get all kinds of charges coming out randomly from eBay and I don't have the time nor the energy to fight them all. I limit my activity to buying and not selling, that way they don't over charge me for selling. Consignment shops are the better option these days.
