I was listening to the old Trashmen song "A-Bone" recently, and wondered what the heck the lyrics "bang-shift hydro" meant? I know it must be a transmission of some-sort, but I've never heard that phrase used before.

Apparently someting abusive people did to race with old automatic transmission. Think GM had a hydromatic transmission. Maybe was to manually shift without taking foot off accelerator.

Right. With an automatic trans, hit the lever or pseudo stick shift to manually put it in the next gear.
You could rev it up higher in gear than letting it shift on it's own, that way - modern transmissions don't allow that kind of thing very much anymore, even though you think you are in control.
'Banging' vs. putting it in the next gear shifted it faster by 0.0001 sec.

Sometimes automatics shifted slower if you held them in gear past the normal shift point.

I was under the impression that a bang shift hydro was an old 4 speed GM Hydramatic that was modified with a special valve body to have complete manual control over the shifting.

Google has enough definitions of the term that there will be a definition to satisfy anyone

That is my understanding. If I remember correctly, this was B&M's invention, and essentially their start as a company.
