Bad Oil filter?

In March I put it a Powerflow filter on my 91 Saturn. I noticed that every morning or after my car has been sitting for about 10 hrs. I get a loud ticking sound from the engine during start up that lasted about 2 sec. I thought it was just because it has been cold. Now that it has warm up in the morning i'm still getting the same noise. Could this be because of a bad filter? I'm due for an oil change, so i might put a Wix filter in there to see if that would solve the problem.

Most likely you had a filter with a bad or leaky or cheap backflow preventer. When you turn the engine off the oil slowly loaks back into the pan. When you start the engine the oil filter has to fill with oil first then it will flow under pressure to other areas. The ticking you hear is some parts waiting for oil pressure. Whatever filter your using, I would avoid in the future.

It could also be a lifter leaking down.

A 91 probably has several thousand miles on it.

It is also possible that it is nothing more than you needing an oil change.

WHHAAAAATTTT!?!?!?!? An oil filter is some-how able to keep the oil in the top-end of your motor after shut-down?

No one has said any such thing.

Lifters will usually keep oil in them until the next start up,they keep their prime to some extent.

As an engine gets older, many times the prime will be lost and the lifter will rattle at start up until oil pressure builds back up.

The oil pressure is what makes the lifter work as it should.

Also,a filter that has drained its oil may not cause this problem but it can make the rattle last longer since it will take longer for oil pressure to build up,even if it is just a couple of seconds.

Remember, much of the oil system is a series of small passages, when an oil filter loses its oil,the passages must once again be filled with oil.

The longer this takes, the more rattle and such one may notice.

I did an oil change today and put in a Wix filter.. Seems to cure my problem. I think i will stay away from the Powerflow filters from now on.

On the mark. The oil just can't get though the galleys fast enough those first few seconds.
