Back on propane for the winter.

The daytime temperature dropped below 27 F, so my 13 year old heat pump gave up the ghost and the thermostat automatically switched over to the propane boiler to provide hot water to the heat exchanger of the furnace. We don’t have natural gas in this area.

The cellular monitor on the tank called up the propane company and they topped up my 500 gallon tank to 80%. The price converts to $1.80 per USG which I consider to be on the lower end of the pricing in the last 5 years.

The thermostat reconfigures when to turn on the furnace, sensing that the outlet temp at the air ducts is now warmer. The thermostat is programmed to bring the temp to 70F by 6:00 AM. It overshot it this morning and it was 70 F by 5:00 AM. It self learns and will get dialled in later this week. Now if I can only get the thermostat and cell dialler to stop plotting against me ….

Nope. Already converted for my Americano friends.
$1.80 USD per USG. You were right to question that. Thanks. We buy in CDN dollars per liter. Also that is with delivery, taxes and weirdo charges included.
Wow, that is pretty good! For some reason Ontario is very expensive at the moment? But I should check our tank, as we try to fill it before real winter starts and the truck might have trouble on our driveway. We just run the kitchen stove and hot water heater on it, so we can go almost a year on a tank.

That is a good price per gallon of propane.
I own my in-ground 1000 gal tank and I shop prices around the 4 or 5 companies we have local and get the lowest priced company to fill it in July when propane is usually cheapest.

Fantastic price! Locally the best I can find is just under $4/gal. Good thing I live in South FL and don't need heat. Just dryer and cooktop. I have 2ea 60 pound tanks. They last about a year.

A silly note: A family member in VT w/a large house has 3 heat pumps and they also fail during very cold weather. He has a large propane furnace. It failed 2 weeks into a previous cold snap. The repair company could not get the furnace to work. So they replaced it for $15,000, and it too would not function.....

Bottom line, in 2 weeks he emptied his recently filled tank. :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: and a simple refill would have been a lot cheaper than a new furnace.

This thread got me Curious...
luckily we're JUST close enough to town that we have natural gas...
just looked up the local propane company ( cherryspropane.com ) to see what their current pricing is. I'm assuming the listed price is per gallon (US):
$1.549 if you own or lease the tank
$1.649 if THEY own the tank
and a 5¢/gal discount if you pay within 10 days of delivery.

Wow! That price for propane is great. If I could get it for your price I would swap my 500 gallon tank for a 1,000 gallon tank and keep it full. Price here is $2.75 and all of the suppliers are within $0.50/gal of each other.

That is crazy cheap either way.

Glad I have natural gas in my 2016 new construction house. In something like 2021, the governor of NY banned all new construction from accessing natural gas, which is ridiculous. Yet, they allow propane. Makes no sense to me

Well, I guess paying for propane to heat, makes a good low temperature heat pump seem like a great deal! Also I think NY state has a pretty good deal with Hydro Quebec for cheap fossil fuel free electricity.
I assume the thinking is that if we could prevent global warming from raising the ocean level, the state might save $10's of billions in trying to keep New York City from flooding... Sort of not shooting yourself in the foot idea.

They charge for the customer being a weirdo? Dang, it's a good thing they aren't delivering to me, the weirdo charge when they find out I have a motor oil obsession, would be astronomical...

I'd really like to switch my house from oil to a propane fired Rinnai (or the like) combi boiler and also do away with the electric water heater. Oil is $3.19 right now and seems to be going up. Can't quite justify $10K+ right now as the old Burnham is still working.
